Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I think its be in poor taste to announce her successor two full years before she's introduced. I could understand it more after this season, cause the end would be closer than the beginning.

Announced.

There's absolutely no public information on when he was hired. It'e equally likely that it happened months ago and was announced now as they were about to start hiring people at which point it would leak out.

The search for Chibnall's replacement as Showrunner was still ongoing (i.e. in progress) as of late July/early August according to J. Michael Strazynski and the response he received from the BBC in relation to his inquiry about the position.

With the exception of Eccleston to Tennant, the announcement of the next Doctor has happened after the outgoing Doctor's final season has finished airing but before the broadcast of any Specials that the outgoing Doctor may have filmed.
The Next Doctor aired Christmas day in 2008 so several weeks before Smith was announced.
Also, The Writer's Tale makes it very clear all of Tennant's 2009 specials were filmed after Smith's casting was announced.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I would like DW to be a bit more bold and adventurous; we don't need to see her saving the universe every episode. If SM is brought back to pen a few specials I'd like that too. Moffat's weakness was in setting up season-long arcs with too many mysteries with only the Doctor being able to save everything bec he was basically a god. Character driven stories were the best.
It would be fantastic if David Tenant were to return as the Master, but I don't see that as plausible. He certainly won't return full time, although a reunion special could work.

"Could mean", this is why UK tabloids are a utter joke today, not even worth using as toilet paper, stories and drama out of the ether, you may as well get your news from a crystal ball these days rather than UK media.

and who are the sources? I can understand not revealling names, but reporting with damn will give some context (e.g state the sources are X but are being hidden because they aren't authorised to discuss the matter).

ran into the paywall bit but does the article by chance mention if Bad Wolf are taking on costs for production and thus saving the BBC money?

It's also worth remembering that The Times is owned by the same person who owns Fox News and is run by people who are actively trying to destroy the BBC at every possible opportunity.

His newspapers really love their "sources".

the ones in Australia often quote "sources" when they are looking to have a kick (which is frequently) at the Sussexs'.

I find that difficult to believe as RTD is one of the fiercest defenders of the BBC.

While we are eagerly awaiting RTD's return, let's not forget that his era had its problems, too. I know people don't like to hear it 'cause it's not pc, but this video is well worth a watch, even though it's several years old:

The Year Doctor Who DIED - AGENDA PUSHING SERIES? (Proof)

RTD's worst problem related to Doctor Who, in my opinion at least, was that he's a bit of an edge lord and at times has the maturity of a dumb 13 year old, which is how shit like Torchwood came about. But, he rarely let that part of him infect the main Doctor Who series (the farting aliens in series 1 and the horrific Love & Monsters being the only real exceptions), and all the great stuff in his run makes up for occasional crap.

His second worst problem was probably his hatred of Galifrey/The Time Lords. He was very petty when it came to stuff like that, they definitely would never have came back at all if he had stayed in charge. But, at least he seems to like most of the rest of the franchise, unlike the current guy. I'll take never seeing Galifrey/the time lords again if we can just get out of the "timeless child" bullshit.
