Russell T Davies on Carlyle going to SGU

Look what they did to Torri Higginson, they treated her like garbage, so within 2 years the writers won't know what to do with his character and he will be killed off to make room for some alien that acts like a Klingon.

Oh, please. Yes, they fired her at the end of the third season and that sucks. But what evidence do you have that says they treated her badly? Even when they canned her, it was done in a professional manner. In TV business, it was lucky that she had a job for the amount of time that she did (no, I'm not necessarily defending the decision to can her). Also, how come everyone feels so bad for TH, but no one ever peeps up over Rainbow Sun Franks?

I also find it interesting that before the character was written out, there was a large portion of people who hated Weir and wanted her gone. Then when it actually happens, the fanbase turns.

They also treated Paul McGillion like sh*t, what Mallozi did to him was laughable

Oh god yes. They make the doctors the best characters and then kill them off. He was, and still is, the best character on Atlantis. Is he dead again? i stopped watching, after 14 seasons of Stargate I finally gave up. I couldn't what Atlantis became. At least with Sg-1 I just pretend the last few seasons were a different, bad, show, but Atlantis... sad...

Are you out of your mind? She was thrown away like trash because they didn't know what to do with her. She was told "Your fired", she came out and said the way they handled it was so poorly, that's rarely done. She had a 6 year contract, she moved up there and without any warning they kicked her ass out.

Then when they thought of a storyline for her "dead" character they begged to have her come back and she rightfully told them to fuck themselves. I like her more now than when she was on the show.

Not to mention putting McGillion's acting career at the mercy of whether or not a few fans can get their 'Bring Back Carson campaign' televised on national tv... as Mallozi intructed them. That was the deal and if the fans managed it, they'd hire McGillion for more episodes.

What a complete f***er.

I'm sorry. I disagree with you BigDaddy. Yes, she was fired. But, honestly, according to this article, it really appears to me that TH has sour grapes. The producers called her to their offices to tell her that they were reducing her role (admittingly, as a way to release the character). If anything, that is far from "treating her like shit". They didn't have to do jack squat, like most TV producers probably would. They didn't even have to bring her back the next season.

I dunno. TH is the only one that I read about bitching and moaning about how she was let go SGA. I have never heard of complaining from Rainbow Sun Franks, Paul McGillion, or the dude who played Jonas (I cannot think of his name at the moment).

Lets just agree to disagree.

Way to read too much into something. Yes, he said that, but it was tongue-in-cheek (which somewhat demonstrates my point from up thread). They said when word first got out that Carson was no more that they have a back door way to bring him back. If anything, bringing him back was the boneheaded move. They should have left him dead.

I agree. The problem with Weir was that, story wise, it was handled piss poorly and they replaced her with a really boring version of Sam.

I don't know the ins and outs of backroom dealings on the Stargate shows but it looks to me like the actors often have to deal with the consequences of things that are the writers' and producers' faults, such as lacking the least scintilla of imagination that might allow them to think of interesting things to do with perfectly good characters played by perfectly good actors.

I wonder how much the network played into it? Remembering stories on how UPN tinkered with VGR and ENT, I wonder if Sci-Fi had a say in what they wanted versus what anybody else wanted in the show.

Fantastic casting choice. Maybe I was wrong about this show and it going for the "teeny" demo.

I will be watching it when it premiers.

Maybe Carlyle went with Stargate because they offered better money. I don't know how true this is, but I've often heard that the BBC can be very stingy.

But no matter what his reason for joining, Stargate: Universe has got themsevles a great actor. I just hope they don't waste him.

In response to RTD's supposed tone over Stargate, can I just point out?

Stargate has never melted a character into a paving slab then made a blow job joke over it.

Stargate has never sacrificed a dramatic culmination of a whole series worth of episodes for a cheap plug for the xmas special.

Stargate has never used the same pocket sized wonder device to fix all problems ever in the last 5 minutes of the episode (Admittedly, they use many different types of wonder devices, but they arent used *every* week and the same one doesnt solve *every* problem).

There's 3 good reasons why Stargate is better.

Actually it's 3 good reasons why Russelty Davies is a hack.

I really don't think this is needed Dr. Who has also won three Hugos in a row and gets fantastic ratings in Britain. The sonic screwdriver isn't used in the final minutes to solve everything and yes the Stargate shows have their own problems. I do think that Russell T Davies was joking and there wasn't any serious talk of Carlyle getting the role of the Doctor. And in any event casting the new Doctor will be Steven Moffat's job not RTD's.

From all that i have seen,i don't think RTD was having a go at Stargate.
But all this has done is bring out a really nasty case of show bashing from (i'm sorry to say) the Stargate fanbase :(

I'm a big enough fan of Stargate to own all the dvds so far, and seen them multiple times, but I can see it's faults too.
I have to say I don't think it was a serious jab at the show, so much as surprise at a rather big name actor being cast in a pretty low budget cable sci-fi, and just having a laugh about it, and even if he was even seriously taking a stick to Stargate and bashing it, I kinda would have to agree with him, I wouldn't expect a big name actor to join such a franchise.
But it has been fun seeing some of the fanboy responses.
