Rush to Play Live on Colbert Report

I finally caught the interview this afternoon. OUTSTANDING! I think that's the first time I've actually hear Niel speak. He never appears with Geddy and Alex when they do their radio specials. He got off some great one-liners with Colbert.

It's too bad that the link above didn't have the beginning of the show. Some of the director's tricks were amusing. And Colbert's dropping in some trivia about the consecutive number of gold/platinum albums was cool.

Those in the US can see it here. Canada has a mirror site or something but I don't know the link.

Tonight's episode continued the Rush bit. :bolian:

Tonight's show started with him waking up as the song ended. It should be up on the site tomorrow morning.

t'was BRILLIANT!!! I've never watched Colbert before but I'm glad someone clued me in earlier in the day.. I missed the first showing so I had to stay up WAY late to see the repeat..

Damn, I was so giddy my wife stirred in her sleep and whacked me with a pillow.. It was SO DAMN COOL!!!

Neil did a segment on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect years ago, but the other panalists were so vocal, he hardly got a word in edgewise... Glad to see him get some good zings in...

I have an idea that they didn't repeat Tom Sawyer, but that Colbert did his sleeping routine offstage while they were playing and then once that was shot, bounded back on camera to end the segment... I know that sounds confusing, sorry...

^ Hi marillion. When I was watching last night I wondered if you saw it too and hoped you weren't out stomping fires. :bolian:

It's a cover version of their own song that they're playing with fake instruments! How odd is that?

I've never been much of a Rush fan, but I have to say, they did pretty well and kept their sense of humor - something that's absolutely vital to an appearance on the Report. Hearing "Tom Sawyer" brought back some memories of 5th grade. ;)

I ask this out of complete ignorance - do they still make new music, or do they basically tour the vintage stuff from the '70s and '80s?

Their last album, "Snakes and Arrows," is one of their best IMHO. Not only do they still make new music, they still make good new music.

Here's my question: Is Rush's first album any good? You know, the one recorded before Neil joined.

I mean, Neil is such an important part of their sound (both his drumming and his lyrics)...so what do they sound like when he's not there?

The first record is really good. Sure, it's not yet the Rush we all know.. the chops are pretty basic, and its straightforward rock and roll, but its much better than a lot of debuts I've ehard even by hard rock bands in the 80s. While thyere may not be crazy fills or percussions, the original drummer keeps a beat, and some people might prefer that. I'ts simple blues based hard rocks that sometimes emulates and copies their imitatiors. I love "Finding my Way" Before and After, "In the Mood, "Need some Love "Take a Friend" but it's really "Working Man " that's the highlight. Classic Rush. It's a seven minute long workout but nothing not a single note feels out of place, and it has many coolm riffs.

As if I didn't already know Neil wasn't yet part of the band: He would never write songs with titles like that. Too common.

Other observations:

- Why the HELL is Vapor Trails out of print? :(

- After listening to the title track from Roll The Bones I find myself hoping that Geddy Lee never, ever, EVER does another rap, ever again.

- Counterparts: Okay, I'm confused, what is 'that thing' and why are we supposed to leave it alone? :p
