Rura Penthe Klingons with masks?

GilmourD

Commander

I dunno if anybody has brought this up already...

You know the deleted scene where Nero escapes from Rura Penthe? There's a picture and a small video snippet of it out there. People were wondering what was up with the masks that the Klingons were wearing.

Well, I just watched The Undiscovered Country tonight with the wife... Wouldn't you know it... Kirk, McCoy, and the rest of the prisoner-miners were handed masks that kinda reminded me of the masks the Klingons were wearing in that little snippet we saw that was deleted from the movie.

Hmmm...

Not identical, but I could see an argument being made that guards would have different, less beat-up-looking masks (hard hats?) and wouldn't require miner's lights.

I dont get why its a problem for some people. Why not have Klingons with helmets/masks? Must every single Klingon wear similar clothing? If you were an alien and you saw a bunch of Humans wearing turbans would you assume that every single human wears a turban?

The masks are a truly inspired idea. They are clearly Klingons, but this entirely avoids the smooth-vs-bumpy debate/war. This was what's under their helmets can be left to the imagination/preferences of the viewer.

Actually, I'm rather hoping to see this scene on the eventual DVD release. I think it would've helped to flesh out Nero quite nicely.

Agreed. I do think that Nero and the Romulans wanted more screen time for development. As we saw it in theaters, they're a little sketchy.

There isn't one, really.

The fact that the helmets have bumps is, of course, an acknowledgment of the bumpy Klingons. Even if one suggests that not every Klingon under every mask has bumps, that's still acknowledging that there's variation - which is exactly what's been established, as of Star Trek: Enterprise.
