News RUMOR: Whittaker potentially leaving

I'd hoped there might have been a Smith or Capaldi box announced over Covid while they were all 'resting'. Or at the very least a Martin.

Capaldi doesn't want to do BF as he doesn't think people should have to pay anything beyond the BBC license fee for Doctor Who stories. (Which is odd as he's praised the comics in the past.) He'll happily charge you a fortune for an autograph and a photo with him, though...

Oh and if you do a Google search you can find a clip of him in an interview where he describes audio drama as dull and boring.

DWM (though kind expensive now) is an affordable way for a fan to get new stories, so were the novels, he knows that BF is not that, and he’s not wrong. Especially when he knows fan thoughts run to completionist behaviour.
I have only bought half a dozen BF audios myself, and the best thing was when they were on radio 7/4. They aren’t things for ‘boys and girls’ they are things for beardy blokes and women in Tardis dresses from Etsy. The fact they are vinyl just drives that home.

True.

I'd hoped there might have been a Smith or Capaldi box announced over Covid while they were all 'resting'. Or at the very least a Martin.

Having said that, we got an Ecclestone. Mustn't be greedy...
I imagine Smith and definitely Capaldi are still in their post-cool-off period.

As for Martin, Big Finish won't have the rights for her until at least after Chibnall leaves, maybe even longer if the next person in charge wants to use her.

Richard E Grant.

Again.
Third time is the charm! :D

The new Big Finish format might just possibly include Smith. The monthly releases only go to #275 and there's apparently going to be a soft relaunch / jumping on point in 2022 with a rotating monthly boxset release schedule. For 12 Doctors.

That includes the new younger War Doctor releases so will presumably cover Doctors 1 to 11. I know they're planning to use Jacob Dudman for 'Chronicles' but would it be too much to hope that Smith might be planning to sacrifice a couple of weekends a year ?

Especially in the light of Ecclestone's remarkable recent stepping on board.

I don’t know if I want a fanboy/girl but I really want someone who is excited and pleased to be there and really has a vision for the show. I definitely felt that both RTD & Moffat felt that way. I never felt the same about Chibnall, perhaps unfairly; I can’t put my finger on why I feel so, but the impression I got that was, although he is obviously a long-term fan, he accepted the role reluctantly. I guess he had a vision, whether or not I liked it, it just didn’t seem a particularly original or strong one to me. YMWD.

Honestly, I’d be fine with them parking the show for a year or two until they got the right person or persons to move forward with it.

I agree, Chibnall always gave the impression of doing the job under sufferance. "Oh if I must" and despite talk of a five year plan he's now saying "Me and Jodie agreed from the start, three years and out" WTF? This coupled with the fact that he just isn't as visionary as either RTD or Moffat was a disaster waiting to happen. Hiring a plaid nice Doctor into the bargain just made it a perfect storm.

I wouldn't be surprised if Doctor Who went away for a while after next year's specials.

Hell, I might even prefer it that way.

The BBC have already said they plan to have a new show runner and Doctor in place ASAP. I can see them ideally wanting season 14 to run in 2023. New show runner, new Doctor and in time for the 60th anniversary, why pass up publicity like that for a few fallow years (especially when it feels like we've already had a few fallow years).

Anyway, I'm slightly sorry to see Whittaker go as I think with better material/fewer companions she could have been good, I'm not remotely sorry to see Chibnall go.

My initial wish list?

Jo Martin (make her the 14th and the whole Timeless Child thang a big hoax)
Paterson Joseph (hey I've been cheering for the guy since the 90s, not going to stop now)
Alexander Siddig (with or without beard)
Dolly Wells
Lydia West (part of me thinks she's too young but she's roughly the same age Matt was so why not)
Nicola Walker (just got out of a recurring role, and someone else I've championed for a long time)

My would love to have but won't happen list?

Michael Sheen (he'd be fantastic but I think he's way too busy and he'd be way too expensive and I suspect he might only do a season or two)

My initial won't list?

Richard Ayoade (as the man himself keeps telling people, he's not an actor!)
Kris Marshall (please no!)

As for show runner...that's a whole 'nother list (or three) I'd agree they don't need to be a fan, but we need a good writer, and we need someone with vision. Would love PWB but she's way too busy (and frankly might not want the gig anyway).

Hell if I were the BBC I'd beg Pemberton and Shearsmith to do it!

Oh, good call. Only I'd give it the entire LOG team in various roles, to be divided amongst themselves.

"Two seasons fixed contract - three if you want it. Off you go !"

"Yes, you can nail "9" to the Tardis door... "

Assuming they get a new showrunner selected within the next few months, that should give them time to get a new season ready to premiere fall 2023,* which I imagine they'd want since they can have the 60th anniversary encompassed within the season, saving them from spending money on a separate special for the anniversary.

*I'm basing this on the fact that all modern showrunners have had two years of prep time before their first seasons premiered. RTD was announced in 2003, his first season premiered 2005. Moffat was announced in 2008, his first season premiered in 2010, Chibnall announced in 2016, season premiered in 2018.

He said five years, not five series. 2018-2022.

"Loki" showed us that Sophia di martino could play a GREAT doctor. Heck there were time when she acted alot like Jodie

She’s too similar for that reason. It’s be a .5 regen like TUAT. Though I basically agree with your assessment.

I’ll hold out for Adrian Lester.

Right, his plan all along was to stretch three seasons over five years, even contriving to split his last season to ensure he hit his five year target.

Given the endless disasters and delays that have plagued the series since RTD left he probably figured three series in five years would be all they could manage.

Either that or the BBC are desperately trying to revive the series fortunes and dumped the pair while allowing them to say it was their decision to save face.

Yeah I'm going to go with option 2

Given how he came on board, with Moffat and Co having to conjour TUAT out of the air to keep the Christmas special a thing (which Chibnall then cocked) it is absolutely believable, frankly.

Funnily enough I wasn't serious about that when I wrote it but if we get to the end of their time without seeing Jo Martin and Sasha Dhawan again or if the whole thing gets hastily wrapped-up / retconned in their last episode I might change my mind.
