News RUMOR: Whittaker potentially leaving

Totally outstayed its welcome, even before Ruth left. And the way she was apparently treated behind the scenes didn’t encourage me to add to its ratings.
Yeah, the reasons for her departure are troubling.

I only kept watching because I'm a completist. That and Maura Tierney, who I've adored since NewsRadio.

So the next doctor can do this?

Dan- But! But! Its..........

Whitaker- Yeah it's bigger on the inside.

Dan- *underneath his breath* I love it when I say that.

Capaldi rocks, but those clips really sell a harder-edge sci-fi. It's definitely a lost art.

Of course, when they left Earth, the first place they went to was an alien diner:

Yeah, I think you’re right, it was more of a general observation (Dracula also reminded me of how much I miss Moffat’s writing in Who, but that’s by-the-by).

You and me both. Love them or hate them there was a zing to the RTD and Moffat versions of Who that's sadly lacking now. Under their tenure the show was a boisterous, gregarious larger than life figure at a party shouting "OI, pay attention to me!" Under Chibnall the show's a timid fellow nervously raising their hand. "Excuse me, I really hate to interrupt but would anyone mind if I said something?"

When I click on that link, I just get "Sorry, page unavailable." Indeed, I even tried Googling the story and still got the same thing when I clicked on their link.

So I see on Gallifrey Base those who say they did read this Sun article before it was removed say it was just a reprint of one of Whittaker's earlier denials, from 2019 I believe.

Ah. If there was a denial by this point you have to wonder what the delay was? (I guess if the BBC and Whittaker were/are in the middle of contract negotiations that might explain it)

I think you've really hit on something, there. If negotiations are ongoing, and they likely are if the initial contract was for three series as I think other posters suggested, the parties involved obviously can't say anything, hence the silence when the media pick up on those negotiations and jump to a conclusion. Simplest fit for what little we currently know.

The simplest explanation is that no-one's commenting because these 'rumors' of Jodie leaving are obviously baseless tabloid nonsense.

But that's apparently a minority opinion for some reason.

I legit used to love this show. When Capaldi turned into a grumpy old man who just wanted to watch everything burn but was still in love with Clara, I just lost interest.
Tried again with Jodie, loved the first few episodes but nothing was pulling me to stay.
I watched the Master return, and it just didn't hook me in.
I dunno.

I enjoyed the first Chibnall/Whitaker season when I first watched it, but coming onto this section of the boards has brought back a lot memories of the earlier eras of the show, and I realized that the show really has lost a lot of the craziness and weirdness that it used to have. And by becoming much more straight forward, it really has lost a lot of what made it special in those earlier seasons.
We haven't really gotten anything that can compare to River and the Doctor's messy timeline or the Paternoster Gang under Chibnall.

^ The Timeless Child narrative is Chibnall's version of things like the River Song and "Impossible Girl Clara Oswald" plots.

Mind you, what would there be to negotiate? I find it extremely unlikely Whittaker would stay after her contract is done, that doesn't seem to be how things go with modern Doctors. Even Tennant and Capaldi, life long fans who considered becoming the Doctor their ultimate goal as actors were out the door the minute their contracts were up.

I guess it's possible her finale might be in the holiday special which is not considered part of the three season contract, which would require negotiations to get her in it, as was the case with Smith and Capaldi.

Precedent. Every other time tabloids reported rumours of Whittaker's departure, there was an official denial within days, a week at the longest. The lack of a denial this time is notable.

If you say so.

"A broken clock is right twice a day", but it's ridiculous to try and act like it's a reliable source for telling time... and it ought to be ridiculous to treat a tabloid like a legitimate news source and act like an entertainment and news organization such as the BBC declining to give said tabloid even one iota of credibility by addressing their nonsense is somehow proof of legitimacy in and of itself.

I wonder what the three year contract states though? Does she agree to do three seasons or a specific number of episodes because maybe the truncated season would impact the latter?
