Rugby World Cup 2015

With just enough Irish in me to fudge into supporting them, and a passionate dislike of all Argentinian sports teams, I'm not enjoying this match overmuch...

It's not looking good for the Northen Hemisphere clubs, only Scotland left in it from the NH well for at least the next 70 mins or so.

Unfortunatly it's not to be, though a very close game. Australia might have to up their game if they want to win the title.

When Slipper threw that intercept pass I thought it was over, sure they had 6 mins left but the Wallabies were so off their game I didn't have faith they could turn it around. I was not polite to the TV with my displeasure at their performance.

Stupid errors by the Wallabies that resulted in tries. Missed conversions, faltering scrum, questionable lineout and butchered tries. From about the 10th minute it smelt like boilover. Wallabies escaped with that win, that's the best thing you can say about that performance.

Here's hoping the injury news gets better. The most critical is Pocock, the breakdown looks a lot less threatening without him. He is close, if not actually, the most important Wallaby in terms of the outcome of this campaign

Added at least one injured to the list with Sio injuring is arm or elbow. Didn't look good and wouldn't be surprised if his tournament is over after a tough night in the scrum and being involved in a lack of communication with Simmons that led to an embarrassing try to Scotland.

Anyway, relieved that the Wallabies got through, though I now can't sleep. Next week they are going to need to be far better if they want any hope of seeing their first final in 3 tournaments.

What is it with us and Scotland?

We were damned fortunate to get away with that. The game was some sort of hideous flashback to the worst days of our rugby, with stupid errors of every description against an allegedly inferior opponent that gave it to us for the whole 80 minutes. Handing them their tries on a platter was just embarrassing. Very disappointing stuff and if we put on that sort of effort against Argentina it won't be pretty.

A great deal of talk about the referee and the significance of the final penalty, but in all honesty I thought Joubert was crap (as he so often is) for both sides. The yellow card was harsh and so was the offside penalty, but he allowed the Scots to bore in at the scrum (those overhead shots clearly showed the Scottish front row going in at an angle) and we could have had a scrum penalty a few minutes earlier instead of Joubert opting for a reset. If either he or the equally useless Barnes gets a gig in the semis or (God forbid) the final...well, there's no good way to end that sentence.

Having said all that, all possible credit to Scotland who - as always against us - really had a go. It's a joke that we play them so rarely, although given how poorly we play against them and how well they play against us maybe it isn't such a bad thing after all.

Argentina were pretty impressive against Ireland as well. It's good to see the so-called Four Nations in the semis; pity we were the least impressive qualifiers.

The replay shows the ball was hit by an Aussie. Crap referee or no the fact he didn't look at the review before awarding the penalty probably ended his international career.

The laws don't allow the referee to call for a review in that scenario. The fact the fourth official, or TMO or whatever we're supposed to call him, had been yapping in Joubert's ear throughout the game but said nothing about the incident in question can be interpreted in various ways (and whether or not Phipps played at the ball - if he had, the Scots would have been onside - is also debatable).

He's a very ordinary ref but his career won't be ended by not looking at a review the laws don't allow him to call for. The IRB, or World Rugby or whatever we're supposed to call them now, won't either because they're useless. We can only hope he'll retire - hopefully within the next day or so.

Well to be fair if you go in as the underdogs as Scotland would be there is less pressure on you, compared as going in as favourites where you are expected to win.

Well, then.

NZ v SA: This could either be one of the great games or another NZ blowout. I hope for the former and I further hope they belt the crap out of each other in the process. If NZ play anywhere near the incredible level they turned on against France they should win, but SA will be much better than France. Whether they have the creativity to get near NZ remains to be seen.

Aus v Arg: If Pocock and Folau were 100% fit I'd feel more comfortable about this game. Regardless, we'll need to be far better than we were against Scotland because Argentina were quite brilliant at times against Ireland. It should be a great game and while I obviously hope for a Wallaby victory I wouldn't be at all surprised if Argentina won.

The final I hope for: Aus v an opponent battered into near-submission during their semi.

The final I expect: Aus v NZ.

The final I wouldn't be at all surprised to see: Argentina v NZ.

Looking forward to these two games. Even the ludicrous, cynical money-spinning game to decide third and fourth could be a minor classic given the teams left in the tournament.

That's made my day. I'm as pleased by South Africa going out as I am by New Zealand winning. It always adds a little spice when it's a team you like vs one you don't...

NZ Australia final with any luck !

Predictable result. It's quite incredible that the ABs winning percentage - 78% overall - is at 90% in the Hansen era. They win wherever they go, in whatever manner is necessary. It almost doesn't matter who wins tomorrow because I doubt either side can stop them.

Hilariously, several comments I've seen on various news sites claim the game was "boring" because it wasn't a tryfest. People who don't understand rugby need to either learn or pipe down. It was still a terrific game, just in a different way. Rugby's like that. :bolian:

I'm hardly an expert - I only really take an interest in internationals - but I thought it was a good match. Edge of the seat stuff !

Having just watched the segment on Pichot and what he's achieved for Argentinian rugby, I find myself softening a little towards them.

Still enjoying Australias start though !

Glad we're finally at the business end of a World Cup after 12 years. I'd like to think the result will be much better this time, but given our opponents and how crap we've been against them over...well, ever, I'm hardly brimming with confidence.

Given I didn't think we'd make it out of our pool I'm a) wearing a good deal of egg on my face and b) stoked with the magnitude of Cheika's and the players' achievement in turning a complete basket case of a side into a World Cup finalist in only a bit over 12 months. A win would almost be a bonus, but I'd still like to see it happen.

All credit to Argentina. They're such a good side now and hopefully will continue to improve when their new team joins the Super competition. Here's hoping they win on Friday. :bolian:

Going well so far.

Conceding just before the break seems very harsh on the Aussies. Let's see how they come out for the second half...
