Rugby Union World Cup 2011

Well well well, Canada defeated Tonga 25-20 last night, well done the Canucks!

With Dan Carter's back troubles, he's been replaced by Colin Slade for Friday night's match against Japan. Israel Dagg has also been replaced by veteran Mils Muliaina. After Dagg's impressive start against Tonga last week, Muliaina has his work cut out for him to make sure he stays on the team for next week's game against France.

^ Add McCaw and MIis to your injury list for the game against Japan, though at least it is the game against Japan rather than France.

For the Wallabies it's the starting side I thought it would be. JOC's bench spot is taken by Mitchell. I wasn't sure about that, I thought that maybe Barnes might get a look in given his versatility.

^ Yeah, I just heard about the additional All Blacks injuries. I'm sure we'll muddle on through somehow!

USA beat Russia.

It's funny the games are often being referenced to wars that occured between the team nations:

England V Argentina - Falklands
USA V Russia - Cold War
Scotland V England - Geez, pick any war through history. Battle of Culloden springs to mind...

I think the Battle of Stirling Bridge or Bannockburn would be better ones to pick for Scotland vs England.

Pocock hurt himself at training which is not great as Deans did not pick a second open side in the 30 man squad. If he misses the Ireland match that decision could really bite the Wallabies in the...pouch...

Pocock's the only one who rivals Genia in the "we can't do without them" stakes. Hopefully he'll be okay, but it doesn't exactly sound promising.

Not a surprising result for SA vs Fiji. Fiji always struggles against the big names, especially early in the tournament. I was slightly surprised they didn't cross the line because they usually find a way. They were guilty of tackling too high too often allowing the SA forwards to drive forward too much. Their set piece was smashed, which isn't a surprise and their handling was average. I hope they do get better.

The good thing is SA beat Wales, so they are still in it, though this side isn't as good as the 2007 side so I'm not as sure of their ability to beat Samoa, let alone a Welsh side with decent form. Glad to see Nicky Little in the team because I was sure he had retired.

Moore is out for the Wallabies as well. If I gambled I would be seriously considering a sneaky beat on the Irish with the lose of two of Australia's best forwards and the form winger.

Edit: Not quite over but as I feared and Australia will lose. 4 years later and nothing has changed, flashy backs and too many forwards not up to scratch. I'm going to make a "bold" call and say Australia will be easily punted out of the quarter finals by SA. As the NH media will once again point out how overrated the Wallabies are (as they have in the last 2 or 3 years) and I can't say I would disagree right now. It is also a possibility that Italy could knock Australia out in the pool stages...

Edit 2: I haven't given the Irish the credit for that win. They took it to the Wallabies and treated their forwards with the disdain they deserved. I don't rate them as winners of the comp, but they look more likely than the Wallabies. More importantly they can no avoid meeting the AB until the finals, who I'm still backing as the winners.

Cat amongst the pigeons thanks to Ireland - if we can avoid stuffing it up (ha!), we could have a route to the final comprising of just other 6N teams. I'd bite your hand off for that.

:censored:

Well, that was abysmal. Entirely predictable, but abysmal. Some of our blokes really need to stop believing the crap they read about themselves (and the journos I was grumbling about upthread now have egg all over their stupid faces yet again) and realise they're not as marvellous as they think they are. Hard to argue with Jono's assessment of our forwards, who continue to go missing when any sort of blowtorch is applied.

I'd better not say any more than that, but we've now made it incredibly difficult for ourselves. Kudos to Ireland, who always give us a hard time and should be treated accordingly by our mob. We helped them out with our general ineptitude but they were worthy victors.

Well, fuck. I was rooting for Australia. If Italy's road was already complicated, now it becomes horrendously difficult. Winning the last match against Ireland was already close to impossible, now we must not give them the defensive bonus (or getting the offensive bonus ourselves). Yeah, right.

Well, that was an entertaining game, watched it with a bunch of mates at a friend's house. Being proud Kiwis we were of course rooting for Ireland, and they certainly delivered! When Tommy Bowe almost ran the length of the field after catching Cooper's 'trick' pass we almost went mental with excitement. The predicted quarter final between SA and Aussie should be interesting, especially if the Wallabies bring their excellent scrumming abilities again

The All Blacks vs Japan game was the slaughterfest we were all expecting, but I'm still not happy with the amount of handling errors the boys in black are making. You might get away with it against Tonga and Japan, but it will create problems against teams like France. Sort it out, Graham Henry!

Well, at least now certain rugby journalists here will stop going on about a AB v Wallabies final. Reminds me of 2007 when the same guys were all about a Wallabies v AB semi-final and we all know how that ended up.

Not good for us, but it's good for the RWC. Hopefully they'll be a few more surprise results.

Well, it happens :p

Wales vs Samoa looked like an interesting game from the highlights I've seen - it doesn't air on free to air tv here until 10.30 tonight. So an Ireland-Wales quarterfinal seems likely. England vs Georgia was another one-sided slaughterfest by the looks of it. Last match of the weekend will be France vs Canada, starting in five minutes. Hopefully the Canucks will do well, I guess I'll find out when I get up tomorrow morning!

Italy v Russia today. Italy needs a bonus point win to keep the pressure on the Irish and Wallabies.

Tomorrow the Wallabies should announce there team. I have half a dozen ideas for what changes should be made, which includes 4 for the starting side and up to 3 missing the 22. It will be interesting to see just what Deans and Co do. As with Italy, Wallabies need to makes sure they get a bonus point win.

Edit: O'Connor is going to miss the game, which would probably put a dampener on a few of the changes I'd like to see.

Good news for Italy so far, they have a bonus point and save a massive collapse they'll have their first win of the tournament.

From an Australian perspective, it would be nice to see Italy keep winning. :D

I'll be interested to see how many of our blokes are "rested" for the next fixture. I'm hoping that Barnes will get a start, at least.

Barnes could only make the bench and Horne has the inside centre position. Mitchell comes on for O'Connor and that's it. Before O'Connor was injured I had hoped for a clear out of the centres for AAC/Barnes combo.

Horwill is the only person rested, but Moore (who wants straight lineouts anyway?), Kepu, Samo, Vickerman and McCabe have jumped down to the bench. The new face is Sharpe, which is good because with SA now in the way Sharpe is a major possibility for starting in the finals and he needs game time. With Horwill out Genia is captaining.

They've gone for a 4/3 split on the bench and the person to miss out is Higginbotham. I don't know what he has done to deserve the flick. Maybe he's friends with Giteau. He has shown good form and deserves to be starting this match. Reminds me of Mitchell in 2007, he was in great touch but languished on the bench for most of the tournament while Tuqiri lazed about on the wing.

Now from the news desk: Some sport supporters are mean to opposition supporters! All this and more to be overblown at 6PM tonight!
