That'd be the only way I could solve one of those things.

I see that these things go all the way up to a 7x7x7 now. And I thought the *original* Rubik's Cube was hard? I couldn't even begin to approach a 7x7x7 version. Those must be a bitch to solve. 
I used to do it by the book -don't remember the title of the book though. "How to solve the Rubiks Cube" probably…
See, I still don't quite get this. How can there be a "how to" guide, with so many different permutations of the cube? Wouldn't that depend on 'how scrambled' the cube is, or the specific arrangement of the scrambled colors?
It's about how to turn a corner without scrambling the rest of the cube, exchange two middle pieces, twisting one mid-section -stuff like that; little tools to use in order to do the whole puzzle.
ETA: A bit like how knowing the alphabet and a few basic rules allows you to spell any word.

No, in other words I fucked around with the thing, figured out some patterns and solved the thing.
There are certain techniques that work. I could manage to get all the whites on one side. I couldn't figure it out after that.
nice. i usually give up after solving 1 colour (with the side colours correct as well)

I had one of those too - Square One or something it was called. I never solved it, but my brother managed to after a few years.
I never used to be able to get a Rubik's Cube fully solved either. I could get the top two layers done correctly but could never get the bottom without screwing the rest up. A friend taught me this summer though and I took his cube for a few days to practice on my own. I can solve one now from scratch in about 3-4 minutes. Or at least I could three months ago, I've probably forgotten the closing steps again...
My brother can solve a regular cube in about 40 seconds now and has a wide assortment of other shapes and sizes now as well.
"Rubix" is my bastardization of what is really a "Rubick's Cube."
I've just always called it a "Rubix" Cube because, well, that's what it sounds like to me.
And in reality mine's a "Colored Puzzle Cube."
The damn things look better when they're not solved, anyway.
