Rose voted "Best Dr Who Companion Ever" by Radio Times

Rose ? Good grief, that's desperate. I even preferred Jackie to Rose. In fact I preferred most of the companions since the show came back to Rose. Except Donna. Awful, awful Donna.

As for 'old' companions, Sarah Jane, Peri, Romana 1 and especilly 2...

Surely it's a matter of personal preference. What is the point of this poll?

To get hits for the Radio Times's website.
It wasn't a poll, it's one of those knockout contests where 32 gets whittled down to 16, 8, 4 and finally 2 (so six hits for every voter, potentially, including checking the results). So a lot of the original series companions weren't even an option, and with RT being a mainstream big-selling magazine, the recent-ish characters were bound to have an advantage in a 50-50 vote - actually, the only 60s/70s/80s companions to make it through to the second round (Sarah, Jamie and the Brig) who were all up against other classic series characters, while Jamie and the Brig were both knocked out by the first new series character they faced (and Sarah only survived one more round, against Wilf).

So they had 101 % of votes? :wtf:
People assume that statistics strictly obey to the laws of common sense, but actually, from a non-rational, non-objective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of rickety-randomy numbers.

Ugh, I wish I had known this back in college...!

As far as I'm concerned this was settled years ago when the BBC gave the best companion her own spinoff series. :)

And we have a winnah!

I don't understand the reactions here at all. No offense. But seriously. Rose was the first companion in, what, 40 years, to even be a full-fledged person, let alone a realistic or complex one.

Yep. And among the things that Davis recognized which have made nuWho so enormously successful is that the companions are the characters the show ought to be about.

Well it helps when the companion is interesting.

Rose started to get on my damn nerves from about series 2 onward, when they turned her and the Doctor into a pair of lovestruck teenagers.

If I were to rank them, Sarah Jane would be first, followed closely by Donna. Rose would probably somewhere in the middle of the pack.

I think the point of this poll is to see how many Doctor Who fans they can sucker in to voting in it.
GUILTY. I'm one of them who voted for Rose. However, I think either Donna Noble or Amy Pond should've been last companion standing. But the choices were down to Jack or Rose when I voted, so I went with Rose.

Not a surprising result, most people started with the new series (2005 on) so for many Rose was their first and most memorable companion.

I quite agree, though I have to say Billie Piper was great at bringing the character to life. She was one of the better actors brought in as a companion even if the character was annoying.

True, and the romance with rose and the general engagement in all the companions' back stories which the new series has engaged in makes it further unsurprising that the new series companions would be so dominant overall.

I like Rose, and she was the first companion for me, but I personally would have gone with Jack or Amy when it comes to favorite companion.

The 2005 series was "Doctor Who and Rose" - and deliberately written as such, which was a major part of its success - so it's hardly surprising she's well remembered (however irritating she became in 2006).
After that it became "Doctor Who and his current companion", in the same way that the dynamic changed a year or so into the original run, as the Doctor became the central character rather than Ian, Barbara, so their successors were often just 'the new companions' however good they were.

Actually, Rose didn't start irritating me until after she left and her presence still lingered for the next two years.

You are Billie Piper's husband and I claim my five pounds!
Seriously, I like Rose with Eccleston, but the following year I couldn't wait to be rid of the love-sick idiot...
