Rose voted "Best Dr Who Companion Ever" by Radio Times

I'm calling BS on that one. I was there on the page when it ended ... Jack had 51.4% vs 49.6% for Rose. Unless they accepted votes after the end of the voting, Rose didn't win.

I do adore Jenny, but Jenny beating Tegan? :klingon:

There definitely seemed to be an (understandable) new series bias in places.

Well whatever some of us think about Rose, she will always be iconic, especially from the perspective of those who came to Who in 2005 onwards, so this doesn't surprise me that much.

Showing once again fandom doesn't have any taste. Or least those who bother with voting in polls.

...yeah, laughable is about the most polite term I can come up with for that particular result.

I'm too lazy to investigate this in depth, but did they even start off with all the companions? I'm pretty sure there are some missing there, for example I only see five there from the black and white years, but I'm pretty sure Hartnell and Troughton had more than five companions total in those six years. It seems kind of sloppy to ignore actual companions while including someone with questionable status as a companion, like Jackie or the Paternoster Gang.

I guess I can understand the logic since this is aimed more at fans of the modern series, who are more likely to recognize someone like Strax than Ben or Polly or whatever, but still.

Susan, Ian, Barbara, Vicki, Steven, Dodo, Ben, Polly, Jamie, Victoria, Zoe, I think covers the Full time travelling Companions. Then there was Katarina who joined the Gang, but, didn't survive her First Adventure after boarding the TARDIS, and Sarah Kingdom who didn't survive her first Adventure

As far as I'm concerned this was settled years ago when the BBC gave the best companion her own spinoff series. :)

I don't understand the reactions here at all. No offense. But seriously. Rose was the first companion in, what, 40 years, to even be a full-fledged person, let alone a realistic or complex one. Of course Rose is among the best companions, because she's one of the only ones with any good writing to help create them. There's not even a debate about that. I mean, someone can enjoy Romana more, I suppose, or enjoy Ace more, but enjoyment is not really the question here, I think. If the criteria is quality of characterization, which I think is the only criteria that makes any sense (being the only more-or-less objective one), she wins by default. The only competition along those lines can be found way back at the beginning of the show, in the 60's, when Ian and Barbara were very well-written, before the BBC decided that companions were there to scream, to be hot, to ask questions, and to be rescued. So, if it had been Ian or Barbara, that may have made sense too. But Rose was given more complex writing than they were, so I still think the win makes sense.

Now, I actually feel that Donna was also extremely well-characterized (once she joined the main cast - not in her first appearance), but that's a matter for debate.

Either way, to see people laughingly dismiss Rose is just silly. There had rarely been a companion with ANY depth before her, let alone with a lot of it. You may not agree with her as #1, but to act as if she's not at least in the top 3-4 is just plain off-the-wall.
