How do you rate Rosa?

Sadly, in the US, it seems that's been forgotten. It bears repeating from time to time it seems.

As an American I can tell you it has not been forgotten at all and we are reminded of it every day. Especially now with the Cheeto-in-Chief in the White House.

I just didn't think the first episode of the fully recovered Doctor, with her new TARDIS needed to be a rehash of a story that has been told many times from many angles by better writers. Any pivotal point in history would have worked with this story.

All countries, not just the USA, have periods in their past that does not make them look good in retrospect. English colonialism, German history in general, French collusion with the Nazi's, Russian purges, Armenian genocide, Indian caste system...the list goes on.

What are you even talking about? The episode is about Rosa Parks's moment in history. How do you expect them to tell her story without buses? :wtf:
Episode 1 & 2 had Graham talking about being a bus driver a little too much.
Fine, establishing a back story for a new character, I get it.
But now we are three episodes in and it been all buses all the time.
Up until now I can only recall one episode that centered around a bus with Tenant and the flying sharks.

The Cheeto In Chief is one of those who has forgotten that racism is bad.

I disagree. I don't think it's been told many times, and I think it was very well written. I'm not sure what you mean by "any pivotal point" would work with this story. This story was about racism and standing up to that. That narrows down the "any" quite a bit.

Also: Doctor Who has never told a story like this. Not so directly. I would much rather have this particular story than yet ANOTHER Dalek story.

So? I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. They wanted to tackle racism specifically. I suspect we will be getting to the affects of Colonialism with Yaz's story.... But, if they wanted to write about racism, the Russian purges sort of muddy the issue, or the French collusion with the Nazi's...

Well, I'd say the bus services in the UK desperately need some love (both in fiction and reality). Transport in British fiction so often focuses on trains and cars/taxis. I think that's mostly due to the London-centric view of the country. I say more bus stuff.

I'm still wondering which company Graham works for. If it's been mentioned, I've missed it.

So as soon as a bus driver becomes a regular character, we get stories that involve buses? Oh, what a bizarre and inexplicable coincidence! That's like the time when the Doctor became UNIT's scientific advisor and we suddenly got a bunch of stories involving the military! Or when Clara became a schoolteacher and we suddenly got a number of stories set at a school! It's a mystery, I tells ya!

So, one of the companions is a bus driver. He talks about busses.
Big deal.

I remember Martha mentioning a few times she was going to be a doctor. And Donna, super temp? Saved the universe a few times by super temping.

Did you complain about that, too?

Yaz also mentioned being a cop at least once per episode so far, right?

Hey, we are allowed to disagree on things.
You liked it and thought it was a good episode shining a light on racism. Happy you enjoyed it.
I thought it was a heavy handed "check the boxes" story about racism in the 1950's with nothing new or thought provoking to add to the conversation. Just a plot device and ANY pivotal point in history could have stood in for Rosa's story.

As far as the last part I think you are actively trying to miss my point about history (not just US racial history) not making anyone look good when compared to contemporary standards.

Yep. We are allowed to disagree.
I very much disagree that any moment could've stood in for Rosa's story. Given the companions, I think it became a very personal moment for the characters. That moment when Graham had to PARTICIPATE in the racism... that was heart breaking. And I don't think any moment could have stood in for that.

Rosa's moment isn't like any other moment, just like any other moment isn't like Rosa's.

As far as the last part I think you are actively trying to miss my point about history (not just US racial history) not making anyone look good when compared to contemporary standards.

No, I'm not actively trying to miss your point. I understood your point. My issue with your point is that Rosa's story was about Racism, not just about "Not a good moment in history." The writers wanted to tackle a story about racism. Not fascism. Not colonialism--that, yes, has connections to racism, but, is a different ugly beast.

Not all "bad" moments are interchangeable. Your examples of bad moments in history are about different bad moments. Like I said above, Rosa's moment in history isn't like any other moment, just like any other moment isn't like Rosa's.

They wanted to tackle a specific subject, it makes sense they chose this moment in history versus any other moment.

Really? Can you give one example of racial rights being rolled back? Real ones. Has segregation begun again? Whites only water fountains and hotels?

I'm not saying racism doesn't exist, but the above is a massive untrue overstatement.

Well, after forcing a man on the audience for 50 years, the BBC thought it was time to force a woman on the audience.

They didn't force a man on the audience for 50 years. The role was established and created for a man. Much different. And if they want a woman time lord, create a new one and run with it. Political correctness is just stupid. It's also very sexist on the part of the BBC. They are saying that a woman can't lead a tv show like this so they have to take a classic male character and turn it into a woman.

Hyperbole much?

It would be a "massive untrue overstatement" if I had claimed that "racial" rights were being rolled back, but, I didn't. But, when the President of the US claims there are "fine people" on both sides... when one of those side is literally made up of Nazis, then, yeah, I'm going to say people might've forgotten that racism is bad.

When, during this currently election season, there are polling stations being closed that are in predominately minority communities, yeah, I'm going to say people might've forgotten that racism is bad.

When a candidate goes on TV and says, "we don't want to monkey it" by voting for his black opponent, yeah, I'm going to say people might've forgotten that racism is bad.

When the Voting Rights Act, that helped insure minorities had access to the Constitutional rights to vote, is struck down, yeah, I'm going to say people might've forgotten that racism is bad.

So, you take your straw man and sit in the corner and be quiet.

I'm not surprised you missed my point. The point isn't they forced a man on us for 50 years, or, indeed, they are forcing a woman on us now. No one is forced to watch a TV show.

People who call political correctness stupid just don't like being called out for saying bigoted and sexist shit.

They aren't saying a woman can't lead a TV show... what the fuck do you think Killing Eve is? They are saying, hey, this shape changing alien, let's make her a woman now.

No more than, say, Donna talked about being a temp or Sarah Jane a journalist or Ian and Barbara teachers.

Hyperbole much?

These are all just silly TV shows and you really need to calm down.

No.

Oh... or did you mean to tell @Kirk Prime to calm down? Because he's the one that asked for any "racial" laws that had been rolled back? That's who I was responding to... Or is it because you agree with him, that's why you're asking ME to calm down?

Huh.

But, I agree, for the most part, they are just silly TV shows. But, sometimes, silly TV shows have are on point.
