So my brother is not at all interested in watching Discovery, and as a member of my household growing up he loved TNG and the TNG films along with TOS and the TOS films, but we never could get into DS9. We did watch a couple episodes of Voyager on VHS tapes a friend lent us (my dad hated both DS9 and Voyager, so me and my brother felt it would be bad to watch them with him) and enjoyed them, but to this day my brother has not seen much DS9 (neither have I for that matter, although I've seen some of the best episodes of the series
) and as someone who misses the contemplative, social commentary based and philosophical Star Trek series leading up to the new millenium, he wanted to try watching DS9. He said Emissary was difficult to get through because of poor writing and acting (he said the scene with Sisko and his wife on the beach was really awkward), but I had a remedy for that: I showed him a clip from "Way of the Warrior" that was on youtube, where Quark and Garak discuss the Federation using root beer as a representation. As far as I can tell, he really enjoyed it, and I would like to quote him as saying "Why do all the great stories get buried in rubble?" which I can translate as being a general frustration with Star Trek series' often taking a few seasons to get good. I probably will never get him to watch Discovery, but I told him he needs to watch "In the Pale Moonlight" to get an idea of just how amazing DS9 can be. And if any of you are concerned about him being lost, keep in mind the internet has for a couple decades now kept us in the loop, so even though neither of us have seen much DS9, we both have been aware and fairly knowledgeable about the Dominion War and it's effects on the Alpha Quadrant (mainly through research done on memory alpha to help us write our own LARP stories, cause that's a hobby of ours, LOL).
TL;DR My younger brother misses old trek, hasn't seen DS9, so I showed him the root beer scene from "Way of the Warrior" and now he's interested.
