Romulans to be bald in Trek XI, and another major spoiler

I find Romulans to be inherently uninteresting. I sincerely hope Abrams can change my mind, at least a little.

Whether or not they are bald is about as interesting to me as whether or not the have lint in their navels.

Yeah, but I find Klingons as a group pretty uninteresting as well. Only individuals are interesting villains, not supposed species.

As for the baldness thing - well hell, no one's released any fuzzy uniform images for a couple of weeks. Surely we can turn baldness into a major source of conflict and confusion for a few days.

Which brings up an interesting point: there hasn't been anything that I'm aware of to suggest that we'll see even as much as a single Klingon in this movie. Which is kind of a shame, as it certainly wouldn't violate canon to have them appear in this particular time-frame.

Romulans...yay...I guess.

Are they all going to speak with French accents or something, because that would be news.

I am so tired of the klingons that i'd be happy to not have them appear at all for the next 20 years. On the whole I'm tired of the one trick pony aliens depicted throughout most of trek. Hopefully they can give the Romulans a little depth and division but I'm not expecting them to rectify all of trek in 2 hours...

Now we need a new Trek series on TV. We'll need a series of episodes to provide and explanation for how the Romulans got ridges.

Check out "Who Watches the Watchers?" (TNG). The Mintakans are described as proto-Vulcans. They have forehead ridges and prominent brows.

Thus, all Vulcans used to have ridges, and over many centuries slowly evolved flatter foreheads. There may have been a separation of the classes thing, and eventually most of the still-ridged Vulcans chose to leave the planet, becoming known as Romulans (and, during TOS, the flat-foreheaded ones tended to be in power, the ridged ones were helmet-wearing lower classes).

This is more believeable than assuming the Rolumans left Vulcan and then some sprouted ridges - and that doesn't explain the Mintakans.

Do we really need episodes to further clarify all this? (Look around on Earth and you'll see humans with more prominent brow ridges than others - some look almost Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon.)

Perhaps they are in disguise and trying to pass themselves off as some other species (maybe they surgically altered their ears to not be pointed either).

Don't forget Kirk and the rest of the Federation had never (knowingly) seen a Romulan until Balance of Terror. It's possible that throughout this film nobody (except Nimoy's Spock) ever realizes they are dealing with Romulans.

You know, it's vanishingly unlikely that visual elements like (for instance) the exterior or bridge of the Enterprise are going to look a lot like they did the last time we saw them. So worrying about explanations for ridges on Romulans is awfully picayune.

And Trek fans aren't picayune? ;)

What I want to know is if they are truly BALD, or just have SHAVED HEADS. Maybe Nero is part of a Romulan cult like skinheads.

Or, maybe it was the style for Romulans back then. Maybe a Romulan rock band version of the Beatles had buzz cuts instead of mop-tops, and it became the rage to shave one's head.

Or maybe Romulans were naturally hairless on top. Jealous of the rich full hair the Vulcans had, they began to experiment with genetic substances that grew hair. Eventually the changes led to hair, but then also to mutations that created the ridges. There. See? Simple explanation. All bases are covered. I can now enjoy the movie. :)

I see tonsured Romulans...

So...the romulan guard is presumably a low-class black guy with no hair and his only weapon to guard the planet-destroying machine is an axe. It all makes perfect sense.

^ I don't think he cares about that either.

I don't mind the Romulans...but let's face it - it's hard to make them a race anyone can 'connect' with, because...well, the whole point of having the Romulans is to illustrate their extreme xenophobia. So we never really learned that much about them, past that and a few random tidbits.

I mean, when the most-talked about Romulan on the entire board is a guy who had about 7 minutes of screentime in exactly ONE episode of DS9....well....

I personally couldn't care less if the Romulans in Trek XI are bald. Although I certainly hope it's not because they thought we were too stupid to tell the difference between them and the Vulcans...

Romulans are bald? I think Starfleet should investigate Picard and Sisko (and maybe Kirk) to make sure they are not Romulan.
