Romulans to be bald in Trek XI, and another major spoiler

Sure you read the whole article at TrekMovie.com (linked to in the OP) before eye-rolling at us?

Yes I did, and there's still nothing concrete in that article that states the Romulans will be bald as shown in the movie. All it says is that the head-shaving was meant to distinguish Romulans from Vulcans, but for all we know they had to shave their heads so that their Romulan wigs would fit better.

And as far as the guy who Cho fights is concerned, the article stated that, "of course, he is a Romulan..." Of course? Because he's bald? Does that make Picard a Romulan too?

But, hey, I acknowledge that I could be wrong. Maybe in the 25th century the Romulans have all gone Hare Krishna on us.:)

Well, I guess the presence of Romulans violates canon six ways to Sunday. But since it's time travel, there may be a way to preserve the "we don't know what a Romulan looks like" idea up to BOT. Hmmm! I myself don't mind the ridge, but that also seems to be a moot point. -- RR

The ridges don't belong, since a BIG thing was the fact the Romulans turned out to look EXACTLY like Vulcans.

As for "the presence of Romulans", I don't get your point.

Nobody's said that Kirk or anyone else "in the past" will know the bad guys are Romulans.

"Why are those Vulcan's being so nasty?!?!"

And in a new interview, Anton Yelchin (Chekov) talked about it being fun to “sit on the bridge screaming about Romulans.” And this isn’t the first timeYelchin has talked about screaming at Romulans.

Just as I had always hoped: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=36482

Or, Yelchin means a scene where he gets to yell, "Tor-pe-does awaaaaaayyyy!"

Or, maybe he refers to when Pine screams, "NEEEEEERRRROOOO!"

Or, you could be right. ;)

Now this is very interesting. Especially since the fan speculation, about the Temporal Cold War, during ENT was that the Romulans were behind the Suliban.

I have my doubts that anything that happened in Enterprise will be relevant to this movie.

I'm not so certain. A few months back, I remember reading something from either Abrams or Orci that there would be references to all of the Trek series, in some fashion or another.

I'm not expecting much, but I feel there will at least be some form of acknowledgement to the fact that Archer's Enterprise is indeed part of Star Trek history.

Just my .02 worth.

I like the notion that the baldness is a class-based sign and the working grunts are the bald ones. Mostly we've been seeing (presumably) upper-class Romulans so far. Even in Balance of Terror, the lower-ranking Rommies were wearing helmets, so this might be a clever nod to that episode. ;)

i always liked the notion that the ridged and non ridged vulcans both exist.
that during the time of tos the non ridged ones had most of the positions of importance while yeah the ridged ones wore the helmets.

really if most of the romulans we see are nero and his people it could be thing they themselves have chosen to do in a way to seperate themselves from romulans who may be sympathetic to vulcan.

No, Picard is a REMAN... man, didn't you watch Nemesis?

This was one of the things I sort of LIKED about "Nemesis," actually.

We see the Remans... who are semi-Vulcanoid but not proper Vulcans. Probably genetically similar enough that it was the driving factor behind the Vulcan outcasts settling there.

They look similar in some ways but have some obvious differences.

My take on that was that the presence of "ridges" on Romulans was due to interbreeding with the "aboriginal" Remans. So the ridgeless Romulans are "pure, Aryan Romulans" so to speak. Most Romulans we see in later years have at least a LITTLE Reman blood in them as well. Hence, they have semi-Reman features, to one extent or another.

Canon be damned!
NNNOOOOO !

I figured the Remans were indigenous to Remus while the Romulans migrated there after breaking off from the Vulcans. The Remans were way too different from the Rommies to write it off as evolution or even genetic alterations.

Has anyone mentioned the Romulan Ambassador from TUC?? He was bald.

I like the explanation for the Remans in the Vulcan's Soul novels:

They are not indigenous to Remus or even Romulus. They are Vulcans, just like the Romulans are. They are mutated - on purpose - to better survive in Remus' harsh environment.

I hope they completely ignore the idea of remans altogether - it was a completely unnecessary invention for the sake of one crappy movie.

Now we need a new Trek series on TV. We'll need a series of episodes to provide and explanation for how the Romulans got ridges. :vulcan:

As far as them having shaved heads so at least in part the audience can tell them from the Vulcans goes, I find that an unfortunate explanation for some reason.

I suppose the war-mongering Vulcan-dissidents could've moved to the star system that they named Romulus with the twin M-class planets and later sujugated a species which they dumped on the crappy planet (Remus) to do their dirty work of mining.
