Romulans of the "Mirror Universe"

Admiral_Sisko

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
As I've recently been refamiliarizing myself with Romulan history and culture- particularly the activities of the Tal Shiar and its operatives- I've endeavored to learn more about the Romulans of the "Mirror Universe," only to discover that information on this subject is extremely limited. The information I've been able to piece together suggests that the Romulans of this universe were members of a Romulan Republic, as opposed to the Romulan Star Empire featured in our universe. Whether this speaks to a more benign people than those previously featured in Star Trek is difficult to determine: Benjamin Sisko spoke of meeting with Romulan representatives near the conclusion of "Through the Looking Glass," though this was likely a fabrication designed to hide his return to Deep Space 9.

Without divulging important spoiler information from various novels, I am aware of other possible outcomes for the Romulan people, though one such scenario would preclude the possibility of Romulus aiding the Terrans in their fight against the Alliance, as well as from having any political standing at all.

AFAIK, the Romulans of the MU are identical - in physiology, culture and government - to those of the regular universe. I'm not aware of any depiction of the MU in which this is not the case.

Canonically the only mention of Romulans in the MU is Through the Looking Glass, where Sisko says he's meeting with Romulans to cover his departure back to the Prime Universe.

As far as novels go, Romulans are essentially the same as the Prime Universe. Same history, society, culture, values and so on.

The differences:

The Romulans commit mass suicide to avoid serving the Terran Empire following their defeat in the Romulan War.
After the Romulans develop the Ultimate Cloaking Device, Romulus is destroyed by the Alliance to prevent any more tactical breakthroughs.

In DC Comics' old Mirror Universe Saga storyline...

...the divergence point between histories was revealed to be the Earth/Romulan war. Humanity lost and was conquered. Rising up and overthrowing their masters, humans vowed to never allow a fate like that to befall them again, and formed the ruthless Empire. I can't remember for sure, but I think the Romulans were exterminated afterwards.

:scream: Okay, I'm sorry I read those spoilers :scream:
Really, that's as bad as the Abrams Trek and Vulcan.
Save the Vulcanoids! And that includes the Romulans, Rihannsu, or whatever the latest writers want to call them.

^^ The Mirror Romulans were still around as of the movie era, and our Kirk managed to persuade both them and the Mirror Klingons to ally (however temporarily) against the Empire. What might've happened to either group afterward isn't mentioned, but it seems unlikely that the Terran resistance movement would have attacked them. I could be wrong of course... :D

Shouldn't the MU Rommies be, like, nice? And humble? I always imagined they'd be more cuddly version of Megan Cole's Cretak :)

^^ The Borg as Jehovah Witnesses.

Tuvok: "Captain, the Borg have caught our signal with their sensors and are hailing us..."
Janeway:  "Not again... I knew we should have taken a shortcut through that nebula. <sigh> Open a channel."
Borg: "Good day Species 5618. We wish to ask you for a moment to share you the word of the Queen and her perfection."
Janeway: " I'm sorry, we're busy at the moment."
Borg: "Oh, okay :(, at least let us leave you this pamphlet."
Janeway: "Okay......thank you.
Borg: "May the Queen bless you."
Tuvok: "They are moving off."
Kim: "Our databanks are being flooded by their pamhlet again."
Janeway: "I told you to update our spam filters, Mister Kim!"

Please note that I mean no offense about that horrible joke. :p

Yeah! I hate it when they get the MU logic wrong! :p

And the divergence point was Edith Keeler surviving.

Right. And the Borg assimilate species with hugs and folk songs in the Mirror Universe.

No no, the Borg are an exclusive club that everyone is clamoring to join, but mostly without success. THe MU Borg are such snobs, acting like nobody else even exists! Also, they hate technology.

The Mirror Romulans should have been a small Republic of a few systems, a people devoted to peace and logic.

Meanwhile, the Vulcan Empire should have been continuing it's expansion against botht he Klingon Federation and the Earth Empire.

This diverges from the opening scene of the Enterprise Episode "Through a Mirror Darkly" parts I and II, as you recall we have a scene similar to that in Star Trek First Contact except there is no Enterprise D crew there, and Zephram Cochrane shoots the Vulcan emmissary and has the mob take over the Vulcan scout ship. The Humans then reverse engineer this technology to build their own star ships and then proceed to conquer Vulcan. The Terran Empire has more NX class starships that the original side does, and probably has a larger military budget as well. Having conquered Vulcan, probably the Romulans are repused in their attack against the Terran Empire.

The Mirror Universe seems to go back a long ways, there are events and characters that mirror what goes on in the original Universe, and there does not seem to be a cause for it. The Mirror Universe, according the opening scene seems to go back into the 20th century or perhaps even the 19th, it would be interesting to explore this Mirror Universe history more fully. According to the books Khan Noonan Singh was the founder of the Terran Empire, he didn't get exiled and send out on a starship called the Botany Bay in the Mirror Universe. the Mirror Universe existed before the Terran empire came into existance, it had counterparts to all the major wars that occured including World War II it seems. I'm willing to bet the Third Reich came out on top in that one and is one of the combattants of the Eugenics war that brought Khan onto the scene.

The Mirror Universe doesn't mirror every thing, every villian in the standard universe isn't necessarily a good guy in the Mirror Universe, though perhaps someone like Harry Mudd might be more of the Han Solo type in this Universe, someone who operates outside of the law, like Quark sometimes does, could take on some of the nobler parts in this Universe.

There may have been one or two books that suggested that, yes, but the current Treklit continuity doesn't have that association (Khan = Empire founder) that I'm aware of.

There is a Myriad Universes storyline ("Seeds of Dissent") in which Khan *is* victorious and his empire has spread, but that's not the Terran Empire, it's something completely different.
