Romulan War Era Starfleet Ships

Hello all. I have finally gotten around to posting my complete set of ships that I have designed for the Romulan war era. I did them in MS Paint because it’s pretty much all I have to work with, but I think all things considered, they look pretty good. I’ll start with the smallest and work my way up.

Earth Raider: I think it is pretty obvious where I got the idea for this one. And yes, it is supposed to be the same type of ship used by the Maquis, only in its original form. My idea is that being these ships are not capable of high warp speeds, they would be ferried out to their theatre of operation by modified Earth Cargo Service freighters drafted into service and equipped with a warp 4 engine. One freighter could haul three Raiders and then drop them off in an area where they could act as patrol or attack ships. They could also be used for convoy duty with the freighter keeping them attached and deploying them as needed for protection. On their own they would be capable of warp 3 for a limited amount of time. Weapon systems would be potent for a ship of it’s size and would include a single Photonic Torpedo Tube and duel High Powered Plasma Cannons, much like the ones originally deployed on the NX Class, only heavily upgraded to be more effective. They would carry a standard crew of 12 and also be capable of planetary landings.

System Defender: Another ship on the smaller side. I think of this ship as being Starfleet’s answer to the Coast Guard Cutter. Sticking close to a selected base of operation, be it an outpost, colony, etc, and acting as it’s defence/jack of all trades Starship. Much like how the Defiant or the Runabouts were attached to DS9. They would be capable of planetary landings and would likely spend most of their time on the ground as they would often only be deployed as needed. Fairly fast for their size, they would be able to reach warp 4 for a limited amount of time with the high speeds mostly being reserved for very fast trips across a system to intercept an intruding vessel. Armaments for this class would include 4 standard Phase Cannons, 2 Photonic Torpedo Tubes, and 5 CIWS Pulse Turrets, a weapon system found on all classes from this size forward. My idea for the CIWS is that they were designed to automatically target and intercept incoming Romulan warheads for which they were said to use in the TOS episode “Balance of Terror“. The USS Kelvin was equipped with such a CIWS for which I would imagine is a hold over from the Romulan war. The Kelvin, was supposed to be an older vessel which I could see as being launched sometime around 2200, only 40 years after the end of the war. Engineers kept the CIWS in use even after the war and equipped them on newer ships due to their effectiveness at destroying incoming projectiles. A fact that likely bought the Kelvin precious moments during it’s final minutes in it’s battle with the Narada. Standard crew compliment would be 25.

High Warp Interceptor: This ship is exactly what it sounds like. A ship designed to intercept enemy ships at high warp before they can reach their intended targets. They would be equipped with the same design of warp core as the NX Class and be capable of warp 5 for extended periods. Armaments include 3 standard Phase Cannons, 2 Photonic Torpedo Tubes, and 8 CIWS Pulse Turrets. These ships would travel in packs for added protection and carry a standard crew of 18.

Light Cruiser (NZ Class): The NZ Class is Starfleet’s response to the need of a light, medium range Cruiser capable to standing up to the larger Romulan ships of the line. With a maximum speed of warp 4.5, it is slightly slower then the NX Class. It can hold it’s own in regards to armament with its 2 Photonic Torpedo Tubes, 4 Upgraded Phase Cannons, and 8 CIWS Pulse Turrets. It carries a standard crew of 50.

Cruiser (NY Class 2157): This class is meant to be a ship easier and faster to produce then the NX Class while maintaining similar capabilities. It has a maximum speed of warp 5 and with a heavy armament of 6 Photonic Torpedo Tubes, 8 Upgraded Phase Cannons, and 8 CIWS Pulse Turrets, it can stand toe to toe with most ship classes of the Romulan Empire. Standard crew compliment is 65. The class started off slightly less armed and with a different design of warp pylons and nacelles. But with the outbreak of warp, the design was strengthened and made simpler. Over the course of the war the design incorporated armour on certain more vulnerable locations. Late during the war, new ships of the design were built stripped down to the bare minimum needed components, becoming more like mobile weapon platforms then true starships. When the war ended, and the United Federation of Planets was born, the remaining ships of the class were upgraded with newly acquired technology and once again became a true starship for the remainder of their service.

Also, it should be noted that by 2157, all ships had actual windows for view screens as I think the idea for which was also brought about during the war. Perhaps to counter the use of jamming devices used by the Romulans to mess with Starfleet sensors, and by doing so, rendering the view screen useless. Much like the Enterprise and the Reliant in the Mutara Nebula. With a window, the conn officer would at least have an idea what the ship was heading towards and not be totally blind. This idea was probably in the process of being phased out around the time of the Kelvin. But, being that the Kelvin was destroyed by Romulans, maybe Starfleet, fearing new Romulan aggression, kept that particular design trait in use, hence the window on the bridge of the Abramsprise.

they look like mashups of bits from lots of eras

and lovin that totally not a maquis raider.

Hey thanks! I was aiming for pure Enterprise era hardware in my designs with just a little bit of the Kelvin thrown in with the pulse turrets and bridge design to try and make a connection. Not including the Raider of course, which I mostly just stripped a few parts off of and added a few Ent peices here and there. There was nothing said in either DS9 or VOY that stated the Raiders couldn't be that old of a design. In fact the only thing stated that I can recall was that the current engines on Chakotay's ship were 40 years old. Who says the rest of the ship can't be older then dust?

They look pretty based in ENT tech alright, apart from the rather obvious Maquis ship. I much prefer them to some of the basic looking flying cylinders that some folks put forward for this era.

Yeah, I hear ya oh the cylinders. Can't say I'm a fan. Though I have seen a few nice versions of the Daedalus class. But on a whole, I dislike the really simple designs. And yeah, as I said before, it's obviously a "Maquis Raider". I just liked the idea of the design being really old by the time the Maquis were using them and it would explain them being so non Federation looking because they are an "Earth design". Perhaps being built by some independent contractors outside of the usual Starfleet ones. In times of war, I can very easily believe designs being outsourced to anyone with the ability to build.

Feh, it's not like the SF Museum ships were intended to be hero ships on a TV series. As a slice of history that we never really see onscreen, they work fine.

Anywho, you've done a good job capturing the look of ENT hardware, and I like that you're trying to bridge to the Kelvin-era school of design. Maybe you could try injecting more Kelvin-ness into one or more of the designs? The Kelvin had a rather cool, simple, but industrial saucer shape. Maybe something that's a transition between the curvy, bulging NX-style saucer, and the slim, but blunt Kelvin-style?

Maybe also toy with the idea of engineering-hull style pods that aren't an "engine hull", per se, but could carry additional supplies, a larger shuttlebay or more powerful deflector system. That'd be a pretty nifty NX-Kelvin bridge.

It's funny that you should mention those ideas as I have just begun working on a few more classes from later on into the war and even after the birth of the federation that go even further bridgeing the gap as you would say between the ENT era ships we saw and the Kelvin. They are much more like my NY Class in its later design stages. Thanks for your suggestions, i will be sure to post my designs when i get a little further on them.
