Romulan Sparrowhawk-Class Light Cruiser

Well, it seems my Fed XCA is back on hold temporarily. ADB has an urgent cover need, and this is one of the ships on the cover.

In SFB history, the Romulans have three distinct generations of ships. They have the Eagle series(old, converted sublight ships like the original Bird of Prey), the Kestrel series(purchased Klingon ships that are superior to the Eagles but not very compatible with the cloaking device), and the Hawk series(new ships built from the keel up to use both tactical warp drive and the cloaking device). This is the light cruiser of the Hawk series.

This is still a WIP, by the way. Comments welcome as always:

Hey, I like the way you are going...knowing it's a WIP, are you planning anything on the top of the front section, comes accross as a little bare.

My only thing would be to add more wing like structure to it, as that seems to be a prevalent style among those ships yea?

Where did you get the idea for the nacelles?

These looks great so far i always liked this series Romulan ships they look alot better than alot of the FASA Romulan Designs for the TOS era :)

The Hawk series has always been my least favorite SFB design. This series just doesn't strike me as having a 'Romulan' flavor to it. I also feel the design doesn't convey the concept of modularity that makes this series so formidable in combat. Still, I appreciate your effort to make this design look respectable. Thank you for sharing this.

The FASA TOS/movies Romulan, Tholian, etc ships & starbases were great. The TOS Federation, and Klingon ships & TOS/movies starbases were great as well.

Icy, my only criticism thus far is the placement of those two windows directly in front of the impulse engine exhaust. To me it would make more sense if the spaces behind the hull there were filled with equipment with no room for people to look out and stare at the stars.

rgold: This ship design already exists. This is merely my interpretation of it, which ADB has commisioned me to create. So unfortunately I can't really add things to the design that make it too different from the original.

Psion: You have a point. I think I will get rid of those.

Thanks all!

Are there any websites that list/picture those ship designs?

Indeed there is. ;) I'm not overly familiar with SFB, but I've always been kind of mixed on this design. While it does look like something that might have been built for TOS, it's never really sat right with me. The ventral nacelles are part of the problem, as they just look bunched too close together to be aestheticly pleasing. If they were on the port and starboard hull pods instead, I think they'd look better personally.

Icy, you might also consider moving your signature bar on the third pic - it doesn't look right cutting through the nacelle.

I think that this might be a better overall size/shape for the Firehawk. If you make this the Sparrowhawk, then the Firehawk is going to be way out of proportion, I think.

P.S. Like the phaser turrets instead of balls!

I disagree. Adam's Sparrowhawk looks extremely good and remarkably accurate. I think adding anything to the front section would qualify as embellishment.

Compared to the Sparrowhawk, there is not much difference in the physical hull of the Firehawk. (The Firehawk has one more APR box and one more Hull box in the forward section. It has one more Shuttle box and two more Hull boxes in the aft section. That's not a lot of difference.)

The real differences between the two are the Firehawk's fourth Warp Nacelle/Plasma Torpedo Launcher (the single engine up at the top would be replaced by a pair of engines on some sort of pylon assembly shaped like a T or a Y maybe) and the Firehawk's beefed-up shields (which I'm not sure would show up as any difference in the vessel's appearance).

Top-notch work so far Adam.

At some point I'd like to see an illustration of how the Sparrowhawk modules are exchanged and inserted into the ship. Would you be able to do something like that?

Cheers

There's a bit more of a difference than that, therealfoxbat. I don't have the minis to go from, but there's a marked difference in the SSDs (which I know aren't meant to be exact representations of the ships ;)). Something besides the 4th nacelle has to account for the additional mass that creates the 50% increase in the movement cost.

Its a very interesting design, does indeed look strangely un-Romulan at first sight though as others have mentioned.

Raider: I've thought about doing that too. Maybe if I get to do the SFU Calendar project I'll do a scene of a Sparrowhawk in drydock getting it's modules swapped.

Nerroth: The next Captain's Log cover.

Thanks everyone!

Great modelling job...

...but I have to say I'm not a fan of this design. It looks too 'shuttlecraft' or something. Like a lot of fan designs, it looks too much like a clumsy clashing of pre-existing designs than anything truly new or good. Sorry, not your fault, I know.
