Romulan Sparrowhawk-Class Light Cruiser

There's a bit more of a difference than that, therealfoxbat. I don't have the minis to go from, but there's a marked difference in the SSDs (which I know aren't meant to be exact representations of the ships ;)). Something besides the 4th nacelle has to account for the additional mass that creates the 50% increase in the movement cost.

I'm talking about the difference between the Sparrowhawk-A and the Firehawk-A (both of which are in the Advanced Missions SSD Book). The additional mass would mostly come from the fourth nacelle, the difference in Plasma Torpedo Launchers and the larger Shield Generators. (The center nacelle on the Sparrowhawk has a Type-G Plasma Torpedo mounted on the front, which is upgraded to a Type-S in the Plus Refit. The Firehawk has two center nacelles, each with a Type-S. I forgot to mention the differences in Plasma Torpedoes before. My bad...) The Warp Engine and the Plasma Torpedo are generally considered among the most physically massive systems in the game. Also, for some reason I have never figured out, that 50% increase in the movement cost is the difference between a Light Cruiser/War Cruiser and a Heavy Cruiser. In SFB, going from a Light Cruiser (0.666) to a Heavy Cruiser (1.0) is a 50% increase. Going from a Heavy Cruiser (1.0) to a Dreadnought (1.5) is also a 50% increase...

As for the mini, they give you the hull, two separate nacelles that fit on the bottom of the hull, a single nacelle that fits on top of the hull (for the Sparrowhawk) and a pair of nacelles with a center bar that fits over the same spot on top (for the Firehawk). They sell it in one package as the Sparrowhawk/Firehawk...

Great modelling job...

...but I have to say I'm not a fan of this design. It looks too 'shuttlecraft' or something. Like a lot of fan designs, it looks too much like a clumsy clashing of pre-existing designs than anything truly new or good. Sorry, not your fault, I know.

If you think that design looks too shuttlecraft, check out the Gorn designs in FASA Star Trek.

You ain't seen looks too shuttlecraft until you see those...

Okay...

That's it...

I have officially changed my mind...

I HATE Sparrowhawks...

Yesterday I went over to a friend's house to play Star Fleet Battles with nine other people. I had my bright shiny new Federation Cruisers with me, all ready for an enjoyable afternoon of dealing death, destruction and mayhem to those villainous enemies of the Federation who so richly deserve it...

And what do we find staring back at us from the Romulan side of the table?

SPARROWHAWKS!

Lots of Sparrowhawks...

Sparrowhawks for days...

Fighting Sparrowhawks can be a royal pain...

It was like a gigantic flock of Space Pigeons swooping down and strafing us with their Space Pigeon Plasma Poo...

Did I mention that I hate Sparrowhawks...?

Sorry to say but.. BWAHAHAHAAHA!! thanks for the laugh man. :D

Space pidgeons.. LOL..

The design is actually not that bad, whats the size of that thing anyway?

Let's see...

It's the Romulan War Cruiser (War Production Light Cruiser), and it's one of the beefier War Cruisers in existence. My first guess would be around 80 to 90 percent of the length of a Constitution class...

Heh, sounds like a good time. :D

It seems only fair that the Romulans, who for years were saddled with some of the most sub-par ships in the alpha octant, wound up with some of the scariest cruisers late in the game. :rommie:

Thanks everyone!

The Hawk series has always been my least favorite SFB design. This series just doesn't strike me as having a 'Romulan' flavor to it. I also feel the design doesn't convey the concept of modularity that makes this series so formidable in combat. Still, I appreciate your effort to make this design look respectable. Thank you for sharing this.

I agree, which is a disappointment for me because I'm a big Romulan fan. But Adam has managed to find a flattering angle, at least.

I think it looks about right. This is obviously the Sparrowhawk-A. The modular part is the rectangular whatsit structures on top of the wing stubs. On the SSD, these represent only about 5 boxes each. They would be "unplugged" from the rest of the ship and replaced by other modules, which would no doubt be bigger and extend beyond the edges of the wing stubs. The only thing that seems to be missing is the big painting of a bird on the bottom of the hull, right between the forward phaser mounts and that green object I presume to be the main sensor dish...

(Or maybe instead a picture of a fist with the middle finger extended. The Romulans are definitely the SFB experts at "flipping the bird" to the rest of the galaxy...)

I ***FINALLY*** managed to locate my Sparrowhawk minis the other day. The Firehawk (and other four-nacelle designs) also have a wider superstructure leading up to the upper nacelles.

I like the way this work is making the SparrowHawks look -- keep up the good work.

Cheers
