Romulan look TNG onwards

Maybe Vulcan/Romulan hair isn't like human hair and it only grows to that length and in that style

Weren't the "Nemesis" uniforms just the ones from DS9?

No. DS9 held over the TNG ones, and also introduced a black "Tal Shiar" variant that was later used on VGR's "Message in a Bottle," although curiously the officers wearng it in that episode may not have been Tal Shiar, so it could arguably just be the dress-down equivalent of the DS9/VGR jumpsuits. DS9 also introduced various civilian togs for Cretak, and the myriad Romulans in "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges." VGR also introduced a Romulan science ship commander's uniform earlier for Telek R'mor in "Eye of the Needle" which may or may not have been a military one.

It was ENT that reused the "Nemesis" uniforms out of budgetary reasons. At least they didn't reuse the TNG ones...

Man, Kirstie Alley was hot in that flick.

Yes, yes she was. :sigh:

She was also probably half-Romulan, depending on who you believe, FWIW.

I liked the DS9 Romulan Uniforms, they were more streamlined and looked more intimidating than the TNG ones.

Anyone got any pics?

This thread needs pictures. I never saw NEMESIS in its entirety; only bits and pieces on TV.

I hated the change in Romulan appearance in TNG. I thought it was a big letdown and showed that the show's writers and producers didn't take the Romulan concept seriously. To be fair, all Romulans shown in TOS were naval personnel, so the only civilian clue we have was the female commander's seduction dress in "The Enterprise Incident".

Interestingly enough, the TOS Romulan naval uniform (did they ever bother to name the Romulan space fleet's organization?) reminded me of a Scottish bagpipe player's threads. I wish they had kept the shoulder sash, the baggy dark trousers and the rest. The TOS Roms looked more like astronauts than TOS or TNG Starfleet did.

Saying someone is half-Vulcan and half-Romulan is like saying someone is half-Asian and half-Native American.

I agree the ridges are just stupid. And I'm glad XI left them out. I really hope it's just ignored forever after. I think we can argue that all biological aspects of Vulcans we've seen (telepathy, green blood, pon farr) would apply to Romulans as well. The term "Romulan" is more cultural than biological. They're the same species, they're just brought up in very different environments. That's why I keep saying Vulcan High Council (or what's left of it) should authorized the purchase of all Romulus's orphans to deepen Vulcan's genetic pool, should that become a problem.

And from "Nemesis":

That's a very interesting observation. I agree. Also, I don't believe they have ever given a "proper" name beyond calling it the Imperial Navy.

Well said. :techman:

The Fanon name (from non-canon RPG books) give the Romulan forces the name "Romulan Star Navy".

But yeah, both the DS9 and NEM looks are cool.

I thought it was Romulan Star Guard? I may have pulled that out of nowhere.

Anyway, yeah, the Nemesis uniforms were cool.

Wow. The only thing that bugs me is the bowl-cuts. The worst instance of which I think was Valeris in STVI - but at least that was a variation, and she was of course, lacking the ridges.

Both of those names work for me. Maybe Navy could be their fleet forces and guard their ground forces?

Know what's interesting about that? Supposedly Kim Catrall picked her hairstyle herself. I hated the shaved sides. :vulcan:

The one thing I did like about the bowlcuts was that they gave the pointed bangs to the bowl-cuts. I mean, as a society of conformists, we get it, they all have similar hair. But I think greater variation could have been used that still reinforced the idea of conformity.

I think when Adrienne Barbeau played Cretak in "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" her haircut was sufficiently interesting.

Yeah, the shaved sides were weird. Maybe if the rest of the hair were very short - a sort of Vulcan monk look.
I don't see any appreciable difference in the DS9 ep - looks like the standard "Rommie".

You may be right about Cretak, Stoner. I may have been imagining. But would it have killed them to let Barbeau use her real hair? It's already the right color, and they let Alley and Curtis use their real hair.

I have a theory that for a couple of hundred years, transmissions from Earth went out into space, and the Romulans and Vulcans intercepted them, and became obsessed with "the one called Moe" from Three Stooges films, encorporating the hair style as a major part of their culture.
;)

I just pretend that the Romulans don't have those stupid ridges, and that the vast majority of both cultures don't choose to cut their hair in the same style, we just always happen to see ones who do.

I buy the hairstyles for the Romulans, at least for the military officers. It's probably regulation. The lighter skin works for me since Romulus is not the sun-scorched desert that Vulcan is. Ridges I can't stand, just like everybody else.

Think of it this way, giving all Romulans the ridges retroactively at least explains why Kirk never wondered why Spock's father looked just like the Romulan Captain.

Was it ever explained anywhere in canon how the Romulans managed to keep their composure without logic? Or whether they endure Pon Farr?

BTW Alley is my fave Saavik. And Adrian Barbeau was superb.
