Romulan commander Tomalak

James T Kirk

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
God this guy pisses me off.

I want him and his entire crew found and broken off. I may go after them myself.

So hostile, so hypocritical, so arrogant, such a punk.

And one of the best characters in the entire Star Trek Saga.

The one thing that bugs me is that his name is spelled Tomalak, yet most everyone called him TAM-uh-LOCK. Kind of like it being spelled qagh, and everyone called it gahk.

It's rather shocking to notice that we only ever saw him twice. And then a fake of him, and then a possible alternate-timeline version of him unless it was Q fakery out of whole cloth.

And even then, we got enough material to independently argue that the "Future Imperfect" version was "off" somehow while the "All Good Things.." version wasn't...

Seeing him return in ST:NEM, say, replacing the generic male Admiral, would have been almost enough to redeem that movie! ::rommie::

I also wish we'd gotten more of Tomalak. It seems like the Romulan commander in Data's Day was originally written for Tomalak (who, unfortunately, came off wooden as all hell). It also would have been more interesting to see him in Redemption and The Pegasus (though Sirol was another excellent Romulan; wish they'd brought him back on DS9).

Andreas Katsulas went on to star in Babylon 5 as G'Kar for its full 5 year run. His realization of the character through its monumental evolution was absolutely wonderful to watch.

He also played a gangster in the underrated Patrick Swayze film Next Of Kin, with Ben Stiller as his son and Bill Paxton and Liam Neeson as Patrick Swayze's brothers. My favorite scene with him is where he shoots Adam Baldwin for killing his son.

Any complaints about spoilers in this post can go back to 1989 and tell them not to reveal the ending of Next Of Kin until 2016.

I would have liked to have seen him back, too. I've too voiced how, when completely re-written, 10th film with Romulans should have had him in it for a little bit of fun.

I wonder. Had Denise not whined so much and got her way, would we have seen more Tomalak? I really dislike the character of Sela and can see those episodes improving by character substitution.

Or even character addition: Sela has her chance, blows it, and the comeuppance comes from Tomalak...

Yes, definitely Tomalak in "Redemption", even if in a concluding cameo. Possibly Tomalak in "The Pegasus". How about Tomalak in DS9 "Visionary"? Or "Inter Enim"?

Then again, TOS benefited from their repeated failure to get John Colicos and Kor back. We got some pretty good Romulans in TNG and DS9. OTOH replacing all the bad ones with Katsulas would have cost Paramount a fortune.

I wondered this, too.

Tomalak would have improved either of those episodes, but it really would have been nice to have him in Unification in a different role, possibly debating Spock about unification while Sela tries her foolish plan. I believe Mr. Katsulas could have been great with Mr Nimoy and the Spock parts of that episode were underwhelming as produced.

I wish we had seen more of Tomalak. I thought he would've been a nice recurring foe for Picard. Though Kor wasn't a recurring foe for Kirk in TOS, I can see a kind of Kor-Kirk relationship with Picard and Tomalak. I thought Tomalak matched up better with Picard than Sela.
