Romulan Civil War?

The Romulans aren't the kind to jump into an armed conflict -- they're more likely to have a long running cold war, I think. You notice that during the Enterprise era they didn't just fly into Earth space and start shooting stuff. Instead they had an elaborate scheme with drone ships and hijacking ships and posing as Vulcans because no one knows what they look like.

Hasn't there been enough wars in the novels? I expect the Earth/Romulus war to continue in the Enterprise novels.

If the events of The Empty Chair fit into the novel chronology,

Well, there are a few discrepancies, mostly pertaining to the planet Remus, but several elements of Duane's Rihannsu books have made their way into the current novel chronology.

In the Vulcan's Soul trilogy, the Romulan exodus from Vulcan and journey to and establishment of the twin worlds is for the large part consistant with what Duane established The Romulan Way, right down to characters such as S'task and T'Rehu. Terise LoBrutto, the historian who "wrote" the in-universe The Romulan Way, even has a brief name-drop.

I just write off discrepancies as such-- The Romulan Way was written from the perspective of a 23rd century historian researching Romulan history, and thus prone to a few inaccuracies. Vulcan's Soul, however, was told from the perpective of the memories of one of the participants, and therefore, more likely to be accurate.

Also, Duane character Janice Kersarus (at, IIRC, a feisty 176) appeared in the SCE book War Stories, set during the Dominion War.

Other aspects of Romulan culture as devised by Duane have made their way into other recent works, most recently the Enterprise "re-launch" books.

Is that where the Honor Blades, and all of that stuff came from? And the really long complicated names?

^ That's a long time to wait for a Trek Lit fan! I love your avatar Keith...can't wait for the Farscape comics! I was thinking that an armed Romlulan civil conflict would be inevitable but perhaps not...the Federation would have to eventually get involved I think depending only on what faction planned to seize the opportunity to strike against them in the aftermath. Perhaps this Civil conflict leads to Nero plotting his scheme in Star Trek!

I agree. War seems to have become a vehicle for novels to be exciting. They can be but there always seems to be a war going on with massive ship battles.

I'd rather see more of Christoper Bennett's novels with mysteries to be solved while exploring strange new worlds ...

Or the struggles to prevent the Romulan Civil War from happening, with twists and turns, different fractions trying to gain power ... that too can be exciting.

So Empress Ael's project of reform and eventual reunification may work out in the end after all.

I'm not sure how stable the IRS/RSE division will be, or how peacefully it will end. Each of the states seems to be laying claim to the rightful rule over Romulan civilization, while the RSE risks being fatally undermined by the IRS' control over Romulan civilization's agricultural resources if it doesn't act immediately. Another war novel doesn't appeal to me, but I think that the Romulans may have gotten themselves trapped.

The only thing I've been wondering about is if it finally comes down to having to pick one Romulan government or another, whether in a war or just in general, which would the UFP side with? I'm thinking they would probably go with the IRS since Donatra helped them fight Shinzon, while Tal'Aura worked with him. Plus wasn't Donatra also working with the Federation in the first (two?) Titan books? I haven't read them in years so all I remember is that she had a fairly promenent role in at least the first one.

Not to mention

that the IRS joined forces to help the Federation fight off the Borg invasion in Destiny right the moment the Feds were gathering allies where the Romulans had to be convinced.

It makes me wonder if the Imperial Romulan State will join the United Federation of Planets and we'll just be left with a smaller Romulan Star Empire.

I still stand by the conviction that "Remus" and Ch'Havran are two separate spheres. I can go into detail, but I don't think that there's really any discrepancy involving these aspects of the two narratives. I think this belief is supported by the text of the novels and by logic and observations of the culture(s).

Just like Ford's and KRAD's Klingon books, I think the Romulan "worlds" are compatible.

I wouldn't lay odds on the IRS JOINING the UFP, at least at any point in the immediate future. I mean, Daniels says it still takes another two centuries for the Klingons to join, and how long have they been allies with the Federation?

Oh come on, the book'll be out in a month or so.....
Supposedly. Seeing as how Destiny 3 isn't out yet as far as I'm concerned, I'm not holding out much hope for A Singular Destiny before my birthday in mid-May. :scream:
