Romulan BOP vs Enterprise size comparison?

From the TOS ep “Balance of Terror”:

KIRK: After a whole century, what will a Romulan ship look like, Mister Stiles? I doubt they'll radio and identify themselves.
STILES: You'll know, sir. They're painted like a giant bird of prey.
That’s the only time the phrase is used in that episode. Fans have retconned it into a designation for the ship itself.

Jeez, do I have to do everything around here? :p

The McMaster plans have the main hull three decks high, and it’s a tight fit, even with the lower ceilings of Romulan ships (again, the analogy to the cramped quarters of a World War II submarine).

Thanks for posting that, I always had the Romulan ship as a little bigger than that in my head.

And I hate to "cross the streams" as it were, but any idea how DS9's Defiant would fit into that comparison?

tks

MILO - You know, the fact of the matter is know one really knows how big the BOP actually is supposed to be for sure, so I would adjust it to whatever relative size seems right to you, and let that be 'correct' for your understanding on what constitutes ST reality.

Can't offer you anything about your DS9 question,.. I guess like everything else in the 'Schematics Department', we have to wait on REINDEER WRANGLER,... he has to do EVERYTHING around here LOL!

I am not into ship pron, but if you take the dialog about the Romulans having stolen fed technology, like primary hull and nacelles . . .

What happens if you blow up the main part of the bird to be Enterprise primary hull size; are the nacelles proportional to Ent nacelles, then?

That places the nacelle length roughly around the end of the red stripe after "NCC 1701" (assuming lining up the front evenly)

I think it's a no-win scenario...

A) If matching the Enterprise's saucer diameter, the Warbird is waaaay too large (rough guestimate gives it maybe 4/5ths-ish of the Enterprise's mass) for any feel given by the show, or the premise of the episode.

B) Without the alleged stolen technology dialog (i.e. as aired and thus "canon"), the lines about spies continue to be a LARGE leap in logic with the info presented in the episode at that point (before anybody, anywhere, has seen what a Romulan looks like).

I think Capt Tracy has nailed it... there's no way to get a canon read on the Warbird's size, so whatever works for each person, _is_ correct (read non-debatable or cannot be proven otherwise).

PLYNCH - One thing we have to ask ourselves about this idea concerning the so-called 'stolen technology' is that - at least by my thinking - it might NOT be based on the Constitution Class Starship design, as we know by the ENTERPRISE we see on the screen at the time of the episode.

From what I am thinking:

1. SPOCK states no Romulan or Human has had any contact since they fought with sub-light ships 100 years prior,... therefore, does that not presuppose that if any 'technology' was stolen, it would be based on the old-style sub-light vessels - and not a current Starship of this size and hyper-drive technology,... and remember, SCOTT states the BOP is "simple impulse power',... and yet, we see what appears to be, by assumption, warp drive nacells,...?

2. If I recall, is there not a line of dialog which states,... a 'small' ship,... when describing the BOP?

3. Even if they had 'stolen' a Starship, and even if those old sub-light speed ships were the size same as the ENTERPRISE hull design, why do we assume they didn't change what they had to suit themselves?

4. Because the dialog expresses an idea apparently 'based on design', so does that absolutely mean 'made out of',... ??? they (Romulans) might have used zero physical material from the captured sample, and created the BOP based on 'conceptual design elements' only, and does not automatically mean a 'retro-fit' of an actual old SFC ship.

,... or does it?

The problem is, there’s no established size for DS9’s Defiant. This site gives its overall length as 170.68 meters (about 560 feet) which seems way too large, especially if the main hull is supposed to be only 4 decks high.

Okay, just a thought. It seems to me like it would be a smallish vessel. Why be big?

Hansen suggests the idea of espionage. So, seeing the longtime enemies revealed as Vulcan-like after Hansen's comment is what gets Stiles suggesting they could have Romulan spies on this ship...meaning Spock.

We saw one room in the Romulan ship, that's hardly going to be indicative of size of the vessel or even the height of each deck. That's too small a sample.

Finally, the model has rows of what appear to be intended to be portholes/windows.

Here's a photo of the model where the "windows" can be seen.

Was this where the dropped dialogue was to go? (it wasn't in the episode)

Afraid you got that part backwards... the suggestion of spies is before they get a look at their first Romulan.

Stiles makes the spies suggestion based merely on Romulans A) Crossing the neutral zone and B) Making a sneak attack on Federation bases. Incredibly weak reasoning from one who harbors a serious family grudge (for "_Their_ war, Mister Stiles. Not yours. Don't forget it.").

I think Kirk agrees, just to play it safe. I have no idea why the character of Sulu agrees to support the actual argument.
