Okay, we all know that macho guys are really pushovers at heart. Now is the time to fess up.

Tell us which romances you actually enjoyed, romantic comedies included.

In the past I've actually liked The Goodbye Girl, When Harry Met Sally, It Happened One Night, Titanic, Now Voyager, The Bridges Of Madison County and a few others the names of which escape me at the moment.

My favourite is probably The Goodbye Girl from 1978 with Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. Dreyfuss is perfect in it as the odd romantic lead whose goofy charm wins the girl. I suppose part of his appeal for me is I can identify with his character. But also because the humour was credible rather than over the top. I could easily see myself behaving like Dreyfuss did in the film in pursuing a girl. In fact I have acted like that.

But anyway, guys, share the romantic films, dramatic or comedic, that you've enjoyed.

Most recently I thought Away We Go and (500) Days of Summer were good. I enjoyed them because I actually related to the emotions of the characters in the film.

The characters in movies like He's Just Not That Into You or The Ugly Truth seem so foreign and bizarre to me.

"Love Actually" is probably the best "guy" romance I can think of.

The Hawke/Delpy films are also very good.

The Goodbye Girl is also one of my favorites.. which I haven't seen an far too long of a time!

Others that immediately leap to mind:
Sleepless In Seattle
Stardust
A Walk in the Clouds
While You Were Sleeping
Notting Hill
Casablanca

I absolutely love Solaris (Sodebergh's)and The Fountain (both of which also have incredible OST's). The latter almost always leaves me sobbing uncontrollably.

I also rather like House of Flying Daggers.

I'm trying to think of some more movies, but nothing comes immediately to mind.

True Romance. Christian Slater, Patricia Arrquette, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Gary Oldman, Bronson Pinchot and Val Kilmer as Elvis. Classic.

I love When Harry Met Sally. Annie Hall and Sleepless in Seattle are good too.

...Casablanca
Man, I forgot that one. :techman:

Another one I liked from the '50s was Soldier Of Fortune with Clark Gable. And while Gone With The Wind can be over the top I still rather liked it.

Really good romances are enjoyable for both sexes. It's the "romance of the month" flicks that give romances a "only a female would like this" reputation, imo.

Ah, Valentine's Day, the one time of year I can admit to liking these films without having to hang my head in shame. :p

I watch a lot of films in this genre, but these are the ones I frequently come back to:
  • Love Actually
  • Notting Hill
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Music and Lyrics
  • You've Got Mail
  • When Harry Met Sally...
  • Stardust
  • Much Ado About Nothing (the Branagh version)
  • The American President
  • Four Weddings and a Funeral
  • The Goodbye Girl

Do the Carry On films count? ;)
Allowing romantic comedies means I have quite a long list.

Love, Actually is probably my favourite romantic comedies that is more directed at woman than men.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is also fantastic and it probably my favourite guy romantic comedy.

Can't really think of what my straight up favourite romance movie would be.

Here is a list of other romantic movies I like that I picked out of the wikipedia pages on romance and rom com movies...too lazy to go look at DVD collection:

Groundhog Day
The Wedding Singer
50 First Dates
Knocked Up
Music and Lyrics
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Hitch
Bruce Almighty
Eternal Sunshine in a Spotless Mind
Stranger than Fiction
The Fountain
Debbie Does Dallas

Agreed.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are quite good.

Other movies that come to mind are The Notebook and The Painted Veil, although I'm not sure if would really label the later as romantic.

I like Titanic but other than that I honestly can't think of a romantic film that I like. Certainly not a romantic comedy as I refuse to see those.

I'm quite fond of rom-coms, provided they're heavy on the com, with enough cynical nods to the audience towards the start and middle, to let us guys know it's alright to enjoy the movie, and it hits the right emotional notes towards the end. I recently saw The Ugly Truth which very much fits this mould, and I enjoyed it.

Another example would be What Women Want, which is a similar rom-comedy with enough appeal to the cynical male audience to be enjoyable. The Secret of My Success would be another, though whether there's enough rom in it for it to be a rom-com is questionable.

Older examples of this sort of nod-and-wink rom-com would be stuff like The Importance of Being Earnest (I just rewatched the truly excellent 1952 adaptation earlier today, so it's in my mind).

The American President
Anastasia
An Ideal Husband
As Good As It Gets
Bend It Like Beckham

They Died With Their Boots On
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Love Actually
Love Crazy
