I think the dialogue said that the Admiral has gone up to the ship and that he intends to go to battle.
So he hadn't already gone, he was just getting ready, I assume it took some time to organize all those ships during which the droids boarded as well.

Yep - Hell, in the original 'Star Wars' - there's NO indication that the Emperor was a Sith or even knew much about the Force (probably because everyone involved in production at the time thought the movie would be a one off - bomb at the theatres; but Lucas and FOX would recoup via merchandising.)

Once Star Wars became a mega hit - and Lucas knew he could actually tell the story he had originally come up with - in ESB, he started re-aligning everything to fit his original narrative.
 
Saw this last night and absolutely loved it ! A+ from me

The only things I would have changed/added:

- The music wasn't quite what it should have been for a Star Wars movie

- I wish Bail and Leia would have had a scene together

Nicely shot, and I liked the actors. But the story felt like big dollar fan fiction. It didn't feel like it really added anything to the Star Wars universe.
 
Well, the plot basically serviced the stunt ending that you could see coming early in the climax.

As many have noted, the third act is the keeper.

The cast was first-rate, I thought.

Yes, it is all paper-thin in lot of depts (esp script and character) but sort of fun/fan-servicey. I too am curious about the pre-reshoot ending :)
 
I think part of the disconnect some people have with Digital Cushing and Fisher are that they know Cushing is dead and Fisher looks much different now and their minds can't overcome that knowledge. They know it cannot be real and thus mentally have to see it for what it is, an illusion.

Others either don't know, or just generally accept stuff like this either because it is fiction, or because they believe that the characters should look like they did back in 1977 and just go with it. The CGI Fisher looked a little off because I think Carrie was prettier in 1977 than what the CGI mask managed. The CGI Cushing was spot on for most of the time with only a few times when the face seemed slightly off near the mouth, and I think that has more to do with the face capture artist moving in a way that Cushing generally didn't move so it looked odd for Cushing.

No, I have a disconnect because they just don't look human. :p
 
I saw it from a 70mm 2D print on an IMAX screen. Theoretically, that should be the optimal way to view it. It did the CG faces no favors, I assure you.
 
Well, we all know the CGI wasn't perfect.
There probably still is no technical ability to make a CG face so lifelike we can not tell.
Recognizing real faces is what we do. That is soo humanity's thing.
But it's good that there is a push to extend the limits if what we can do here, and the only way to do it is with high profile films line these.
Who knows, maybe in ten years or so we get a specual edition of the movie where they redo those effects with such high quality that it will be like the difference between "Episode 1 nightmare puppet Yoda" and "Bluray awesome CGI Yoda".

The eyes are the window to the soul. The eyes are the hardest part to nail down and you usually tell if it's a CGI face.


The de-aging works great for someone who's alive to reference.

Obviously. But that CGI Yoda is still a huge improvement over the Episode 1 puppet.
If they did Yoda today with a new theater film budget, he would again look a lot better and lifelike.
These days I don't think you want to look like the original puppet anyway, because that Yoda looks like a puppet not like an actual living being.
Original puppet Yoda mostly still works because of nostaligia, but I do not believe they could get away with it today, even if they reproduced the puppet 100% accurately.
Who knows, within the next few years we might get a new Yoda appearance and see what they can do with him now.
 
I'm admittedly biased towards physical objects. I find it much easier to forgive obvious puppetry* than obvious CGI, and I have a keen eye for CGI.

*Puppets of humans are the exception.
