Rogue One (2016) [SW Anthology Series)

I don't really want a lot of droids. One of my little issues with the prequels, was the HUGE amount of droids. Probably because they could be killed easily without it looking to gruesome. But it just became to much.
Droid armies could have been awesome, though. But instead of being formidable, menacing and scary, George went with comedic relief and killed any chance at suspense and tension. It's like they weren't even there.

If that's true, I hope they have Mr. Cushing's family's consent.

Also, it would be an intriguing technical exercise. They can always scrap it if it didn't work.

That story reads like parody bullshit.

"But the film-makers face one particularly tough task – creating Cushing's legs and feet. When director George Lucas filmed the original Star Wars, he gave Cushing and other Galactic Imperial officers ill-fitting leather riding boots. Cushing complained so bitterly that Lucas let him wear slippers, forcing cameramen to shoot from the knees up or have him stand behind the Death Star conference table.'They are going through hours and hours of old footage from the horror movies to recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements,' said the source. 'It is eerie to see someone who has been dead for so long come to life on a screen.'
That last line sounds like the "source" has supposedly already seen this digital marvel in action. Even if the basic story turns out to be true, I call bull on that.

Plus... "Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was the one to create Darth Vader and there's a whole back story that will come out."

What?

This is the most intriguing part. Could be that Tarkin "created" Vader in a sense that he mentored him on behalf of the Emperor, taught him leadership, politics, military arts...

Or it could just be clickbait.

I wonder what kinds of droids we'll get out of this film. Aside from the usual background Imperial droids and Rebel astromechs for any X-wings or Y-wings that might be involved that is.

Well since the whole thing is about stealing computer files, then it's safe to assume they'd have some sort of astromech along with them at the very least.

In terms of other prominent droid characters, that rather depends on the story. Alan Tudyk's character is a possibility as they've said his character will be a CG performance capture and AFAIK, they've not specified if he'll be an alien or a droid.

Its in the daily mail - you shouldn't take it seriously...

I'm thinking on if the Empire has any wardroid around. Marvel and Dark Horse did make mention of such things being used from time to time to supplement the stormtroopers and walkers. Not in large numbers, but usually a small but powerfully armed wardroid. The Empire not using large numbers of combat droids because of the fallout of the Clone Wars. The fear of the Seperatist's droid armies, and the huge number of surviving Clone Trooper (now Stormtroopers) followed by the training of new troopers for the armor, rather than build a droid army. But troopers sometimes could use a droid as backup fire support.

They probably need him to speak, so that would be a recast with a voice actor to sound alike.

Well, now I really want some poor intern somewhere desperately freeze-framing every Peter Cushing movie just to recreate his gait and step.

Not sure how official this is, but interesting/exciting if so.

Peter Cushing is set to be digitally recreated in new spin-off Rogue One

(apologies if posted already)

Really, if they wanted Tarkin in the movie, why not just use Wayne Pygram (who played him on ROTS)? Or if he's unavailable/uninterested, why not just recast?
I had the same thought. I was really disapointed we didn't get more of Pygram as Tarkin. I'm a huge fan of Pygram's character Scorpius on Farscape, and I was really looking forward to seeing him in ROTS when they first announced his casting.

The thing about droids as weapons of war is that individually, they're not very bright (by design, since you can't trust bright murderbots not to get ideas about who's giving the orders) and their only real advantages is their large numbers and that are relatively cheap to replace. Their main weakness as displayed in both TPM and RotS is that they can all be shut down en mass at the push of a button (again, by design, since it's a bad idea to have a hundred million murderbots unless you have a way to make them all stop murdering in a hurry.)

For those and other reasons, I doubt the Empire used battledroids in any major way. Specialist assassin droids, espionage droids, perhaps the odd sentry droid and of course armed recon droids like the probot are probably about the extent if it.

Stormtroopers by dint of being living thinking beings are inherently much more flexible, imaginative and better able to work in teams and react quickly to changing circumstances are one-to-one, the superior fighters.

Now using conscripts from backwater worlds also has it's drawbacks vs. legions on clones designed and trained from birth to be born soldiers also has it's weaknesses (the inability to shoot straight apparently being the most notable) but I suppose one might argue that draining as many young, idealistic people away from a civilian life and into the highly regimented world of the Imperial military gives Palpatine one more lever by which to manipulate the galaxy. Plus there may very well be a force related reason for having billions of living beings dedicated to (and presumably terrified by) the only two Sith in the galaxy.

There can't be much attraction to a dark side user to rule over an Empire made up of lifeless machine. Much better to take the life that is already there and get it to think and behave like one big machine instead (figuratively speaking.)

I thought it was the conscripts from backwater worlds that couldn't shoot straight.

Vader was simply assigned by the Emperor to assist Grand Moff Tarkin, which effectively put Vader (sort of) under Tarkin's command, since the Death Star was pretty much Tarkin's baby. Vader was still a fearsome presence to be reckoned with, but he was on a leash. He was basically a motivator to ensure that the Death Star's completion proceeded on schedule, under the premise of: "Don't step on Tarkin's toes, but otherwise, carry on as normal."

Once the first Death Star failed, the Emperor likely resolved never to put his right hand man in subservience to any Imperial officer again, no matter the rank.

Donnie Yen tweeted the helmets that we'll see in te film, including the Shadowtrooper

Swing down macrobinoculars perhaps?
The tan colour is interesting. Since the Empire was never big on camouflage, I wonder if that helmet will be used by the rebels instead?
