Roger Waters: The Wall Live

Tomorrow night begins the new tour, in which Roger Waters performs The Wall in its entirety with a new, state-of-the-art stage production.

"This new production of The Wall is an attempt to draw some comparisons, to illuminate our current predicament, and is dedicated to all the innocent lost in the intervening years."

It's the 30th anniversary of the original tour and this amazing album, which I read recently has sold 23 million copies since its release.

Of course I wish it was Pink Floyd, but that's not reality for several obvious reasons. I did read that David Gilmour is joining him at some point on this tour for Comfortably Numb, but I don't know where.

So I've been listening to The Wall a lot lately, and it holds up so well. What a great masterwork of rock opera. Brutal, sweet, sad and dark. An amazing array of sounds and lyrics.

I am very excited to see what he puts together. I'm lucky enough to have gotten second row center seats for Oakland, but it's not until December.

Anyone else else going to see this tour? Do you have memories of when The Wall came out? What do you think of it today? Did anyone here see The Dark Side of the Moon tour? How was it?

Yes, I heard about this a couple of weeks ago. This looks like one of the coolest things on Earth. I'm too young to have seen Pink Floyd in their hay day, but it would be nice to see something before they all die off. That goes for a lot of the old rockers. Unfortunately I will probably never convince my wife to come with, so I doubt I will get a chance to see this. Good luck to anyone who does. It's hard for me to get time off to do anything really, so as far as entertainment goes, I just have to entertain my self.

This would be cool, even though I'm not that big a fan of this album as a whole (not that I've listened to it for some time now...). Still, I'd give good money for Another Brick in the Wall, Comfortably Numb and The Trial. Should be fantastic!

I was 14 when The Wall came out. Perfect demographic for the album, but too young for the tour. And I agree, even though it's not the full band, this will be my one chance to see this great work performed, so I took it. I'll bet the technical aspects of the show will be off the charts.

I'm hoping for greatness.

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I saw The Dark Side of The Moon tour a couple years ago. Gilmour sings a large portion, if not most, of that album, and every song that Gilmour does vocals on, Waters let other people sing. At times, I felt like I was watching a Pink Floyd cover band, what with Waters standing off to the side just playing bass for so much of it. The first set, with greatest hits Floyd stuff and Waters solo stuff was great, but the second set that was Dark Side in its entirety was kinda' disappointing. That worked way better when Waters-less Floyd did it on the Pulse tour.

I'm sorry to hear that about DSOTM. Waters sings a lot more of The Wall.

In terms of the staging, was it incredible? I'm imagining in my head the most excellent, high-tech stage production ever for this tour.

I'm going to be a party pooper and say if it's not Pink Floyd, I'm not interested. But it doesn't help that I'm not the biggest fan of Roger Waters. It still breaks my hear that I never got to see them in concert (I would have given up all my limbs to see them in London for Live 8 a few years back). I remain painfully jealous of my mother because she did see The Wall in concert.

To me, Roger Waters IS Pink Floyd. David Gilmour's Pink Floyd was a pale imitation. Of course, it's my opinion only

It's funny, whenever I see Gilmour I miss Waters' voice. But whenever I see Waters, I miss Gilmour's guitar.

Honestly...I find Gilmour's guitar more important.

Don't get me wrong, I love Waters and I'm totally stoked to see it all tomorrow night...but Waters always seems to make his shows about him and what he wants to say, Gilmour makes his shows about the music, and I prefer that.

Well, the good news is that several of the reviews I have read specifically mention this does not come off like a Rogers Vanity Production. But it certainly bears his point of view (how could it not?).

I'll have to wait a little longer for this than you guys but I'll be going next year to see it in London. And, frankly, I cannot wait .

I've never seen any of the guys in concert before. And when this rolled along, well, there really was no way around it. I love The Wall. And whatever Waters may be like on a personal level, I think he's just been an integral part of Pink Floyd (plus I like some of his solo stuff as well). Plus, as 1001001 said, The Wall is pretty much his creation (though The Final Cut might be even more so, not sure).

I'll definitely agree on that. The Wall was very much Waters' baby.

But all of this is academic because I'm in Japan so I wouldn't be able to go to the concert if I wanted to.

Well...it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen, to not put too fine a point on it. No one puts on shows like Pink Floyd or the members of, because the only concerts I can think of that are equal to this was David Gilmour a couple years ago and Floyd in '94. They do have quadrophonic sound, and the digital projection system they have working on the wall is incredible. So much so, I'm not even sure how they did it. Absolutely astonishing.

I admit to peeking at a few of the YouTube videos (I just couldn't help myself. My show is still two months away). It looks like Waters may have spent a few bucks on the production.
