Roddenberry wants us to like Trek XI more than his version!

Re: Roddenberry wants us to like Trek XI more than his vers

A mildly intriguing idea, that Roddenberry would want a later version of Star Trek to exceed his. I don't have much trouble believing it, truthfully. Granted, while I have never been one to genuflect before a picture of the Great Bird, neither have I made a dartboard of said picture. Still, it would be nice to think GR had enough comfort and security with his work, to recognize others might be able to go him one better. Then again... who is qualified enough to say which iteration is better than another?

It makes sense that to make that call, you have to define just what constitutes "Trek", as has been mentioned already. The unfortunate reality is that this is a point that will be in contention amongst fans long after our own missions to Saturn and beyond.

I think he sincerely meant that, so long as the unique core of his optimistic vision remained intact.

Early on, he certainly was quick to criticize novelists who didn't "get" what should already have been very obvious and unique traits of the Trek franchise, particularly regarding TOS.

I think he would not have cared if Kirk were painted green and the Enterprise were made of Silly Putty, so long as a thoughtful, optimistic future were portrayed, and the characters behaved as previously established.

Which I think is a fair and reasonable expectation.

My take on this is a bit different than it appears most people's.

As was said, GR said he wanted Star Trek to continue and if versions
were created that were deemed to be better than his that was OK with
him.

He also was very protective of his creation. Some people see this
as contradictory.

I think this is 2 halves of the same point of view. He didn't mind
if someday someone made a better Star Trek than he made because that
meant his creation was still alive, but he didn't want those that
followed to screw up his creation.

I think he meant that if stories like DS9 or VOY or ENT were made,
as long as they were well made, fit within the mythos he had created,
and didn't violate the core morality that he presented he would be
pleased.

I don't think he meant that he would be please with someone coming
along and rebooting his creation and taking it in a different
direction. And I don't think he meant that he would be OK with
someone coming along and re-imaging the characters and settings
he had created.

I think he would have been OK with ENT if it had been a new beginning
to the Star Trek universe - if it had worked. I don't think what
he said all those years ago was license for someone to come along
make Kirk, Spock, and all the rest (including the Big E) into
characters that he didn't design.

That's not what JJ is going to do.

Star Trek is not a religion yet. So, there's no sacrilege. Period.
