Roddenberry Vault - Running Times

A lot of folks are acting like if they had included all the other rare material -- there would have been a backlash of fans saying, "that's not from the vault, that's from the teaser or someplace else."
Seriously, anybody would have been upset or angry if all the possible rare, deleted, alternate stuff was included in one collection?
So, I want to see all the rare footage of "City...", I have put in disc 6 of season 1 box set and disc 2 of the Vault and disc 3 of the Vault and look up stills of cut footage on the internet?
Yeah, that's way better than putting all that in the bonus section for "City..." in the new Vault set.
Ridiculous. They will never put all the fotage in one place as long as we buy every separate release.

Can't wait to watch my copy, but I'll HAVE to wait till Christmas, as my wife bought it for me...

Will, I saw you recently posted a screencap of an alternative nacelle effect on another BBS, which you compared to "spinning crystals"; I think that explains something I always wondered about, namely the appearance of the nacelles in certain black and white "beauty shots" of the ship as seen in "The Making of Star Trek", in numerous press photos, on some of the "Leaf" cards from 1967, even the image of the enterprise used on Roddenberry's own stationery from the era...all of which show very light (seemingly white) / luminescent domes. I could never reconcile the appearance of the domes in these images of the miniature with what we saw onscreen, and now I believe I understand why. Amazing that we've been looking at this alternate version of the domes for 50 years.

Watched the first 2 disks so far. I loved all the deleted scenes from City! There were some wonderful dialogs between Kirk and Edith that were cut.

And how can you not love Nichelle, with her head stuck inside a console making repairs, singing "Let's Fall in Love" to Spock.

Agree with you 100%; there is no question that those B & W photos show the crystal effect on the nacelles. Another mystery solved!!! :) Here is a few screen caps of the "spinning crystal" effect from the Vault discs

I'm with you on this. I recall speculating on this very subject years and years ago on either HobbyTalk or TrekBBS. That set of images always looked like it was shot before they settled on the dome lighting effect. I said it looked like there were plenty of sparklies, but no fan blades. Some in the discussion swore that it was only a time exposure and the fan blades were just blurred out, but I never bought that. How nice to see my suspicions confirmed.

This also helps to tie down the stage of weathering seen in those shots. If the dome effect was still in flux, then the weathering visible is the first pass of weathering for the series revision. It is the minimum baseline for the least amount of weathering intended for the series version.

Interesting point about the weathering; I see there does seem to be less "space mud" in some of the screencaps Will just posted, most notably on the front of the secondary hull behind the deflector dish.

Now what about "panel lines"? In the third screenshot Will posted above:

I swear I see a concentric panel line / ring on the secondary hull that bisects the pennant" under the connecting dorsal. I know there is one such ring visible on the nacelles, a consequence of where the wood front part ends and the rolled sheet metal tube begins, but even in the B&W photos I posted above, I swear you can see evidence of another such ring on the inner port nacelle further back from where that one would be. Of course, I have been accused before of seeing what I wanted to see, even when it wasn't there...

ON EDIT: I do see the line (and perhaps another fainter one behind it) on the video, just watched today. I suppose it could be a shadow cast by the Botany Bay miniature, but it does not move as the camera moves, which I'd expect if that were the case.

For me it's worth the price alone for the beautiful miniature footage.

:techman:

I finally got my copy of the new The Roddenberry Vault on Blu-Ray: https://www.amazon.ca/Star-Trek-Ori...2212731&sr=1-3&keywords=the+roddenberry+vault

This was worth getting. I went straight to the special features and starting watching the new documentaries, eager to see any new TOS footage.

There are some stills amd rough footage of snippets and deleted scenes. So far I've seen (with audio) deleted footage from "The Corbomite Maneuver," "Arena," "The City On The Edge Of Forever," "Operation: Annihilate," "Space Seed" and "The Devil In The Dark." And this includes the long rumoured footage of Kirk and his nephew Peter on the bridge. There are also snippets of previously unseen Enterprise shots.

It is fascinating to see these bits of TOS never before seen. I'm looking forward to watching the rest.

If you count episodes where they simply have a clapboard shot that last a couple of seconds -- there are about 45 episodes represented. Mudd's Women and Alternative Factor have clapboard shots and nothing else for example. One wonders if they had more from these generally considered "bad" episodes but didn't bother to show them. Nothing from Miri, Spock's Brain, Apple, Catspaw -- at least that I caught.

Disc 3 snippets from the floor was a revelation. I paused after each seasons clips to assimilate the experience. I would buy another volume of clips like this without the talking heads in a heart beat!
The isolated music tracks give a new experience while I'm puttering around the man cave. All of a sudden the music pops in to grab my attention. I like it!
