Rock bands and boy bands on ENT – a terrible idea, or just a flawed one?

As with many of their decisions concerning Star Trek, this particular idea was just another example of UPN having their heads up their asses.

Dawn Ostroff et. al only gave a crap about ENT because it was UPN’s highest rated show (which, in comparison to ratings for the Big Four, it would have been one of the lowest rated shows on ABC, NBC, CBS, or Fox.) Therefore UPN had at least a vested interest in keeping it going until they had at least enough episodes to sell it to syndication. Unfortunately Ostroff and her cronies had no idea about what the show actually needed. She made remarks about wanting the show to be ‘sexier’ when the viewing audience didn’t care about that. Luckily by the end of the third season ENT was renewed for one more year and UPN stopped caring about it and dropped their heavy-handed creative control, which allowed Manny Coto to turn things around, although by then it was too late to save the show.

This is obviously a terrible idea but ENT already has some unintentional comedy value at times and this would have just added to it. Imagine the cheese if like N'Sync showed up in the first season.

But what's the REASON for boy bands to appear on a show like this? What could they possibly be doing on the Enterprise? There's literally no reason for them to be there.

It'd be like watching Law & Order or Blue Bloods and expecting a mariachi band to show up out of nowhere. Completely random and nonsensical.

The only way to make it work, within the framework of the series, would be to have recurring crew be boy band members, i.e. young twentysomethings in place of Mayweather, Reed, and maybe an assistant to Tucker. And when the crew relax, BoyBand!Travis likes to hold concerts in his off hours, and they introduce the Kreetassans and the Xyrillians to the classical pop music of the early 2000s.

Perhaps the crew could have sat around watching an artificial re-creation, much like in the DS9 Vic Fontaine episodes.

Speaking of boy bands...

Ever since the pandemic hit, I've become a huge Blue Bloods fan. It's now my favorite show of all time.

So I'm at work one day and, over my store's PA system, I hear this:

I experienced a complete reality disconnect.

One of those dudes is now Danny Reagan! :guffaw: :guffaw:

It seems like a goofy idea. Nevertheless it is an intriguing one.

I could think of some ENT scenes that could have been enhanced by pop/rock music.

It might have been a fun to see some band performing the Bee Gees' song "Stayin' Alive" as Trip strutted into that club wearing his tacky John Travolta Saturday Night Fever-like white leisure suit.

Or how about some background street performer crooning Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City" as T'Pol and Archer strolled along in "Carpenter Street".

Would it have been cool to hear The Cars' "Drive" playing on the radio as Archer drove around.

I don't know if it would have been a terrible idea. Maybe it could have worked out, if done right.

One big problem with that: the Fucking Lawyers(tm).

Most shows which use recognizable songs in their episodes can't use them in syndication or home release, because of rights issues. Look at what happened with WKRP in Cincinnati, Quantum Leap, etc.

The lawyers are just doing what their clients want, but yeah... the original DVD release of Married With Children had to replace Frank with this abomination:

Four words: "The Way to Eden." :ack:

Every time somebody mentions that episode I always love to reply with this:

Charles Napier (Adam) would later appear on DS9's "Little Green Men". He specifically asked to play a role as un-Adamlike as possible.

Side note: I believe Napier actually wrote the songs he sings as Adam...

Honestly, I think it's a terrible idea. The great thing about sci-fi, is that you can tell stories not tied to anything going on in current culture . Adding bands to the show would have immediately dated it. Not only that, but it'd feel anachronistic, like why would these bands still be around? No reason why they would be, and still be remembered. Not when you have the likes of the Beatles which are far more popular which experts are now starting to see and feel their star power fading.
It's called classical music.

Mozart, Mendelssohn and Motorhead.

^ The problem with that analogy is that while classical music is timeless, music like motorhead or what have you, is not. You immediately date it, and it would become less watchable as time goes on because of the specific cultural reference. This is why most space-based sci-fi tend to not make references to current-day culture. The fact that young Kirk was listening to the Beastie Boys in 2009's Trek was cringeworthy. There's no plausible reason why he would be.
