Robot of Sherwood censored

Personally, I find it a bit odd that a Doctor Who episode was going to feature a beheading in the first place.

You know, it's not censorship. The Beeb owns DW. They have a right to put in or take out whatever they want. It happens every week. The only reason that we're hearing about it this time is the fact that it is such a high-profile issue.

From what I hear, it's a whimsical story and a robot head. I'm sure it was nothing too scary.

Total kneejerk reaction. I suppose it could be a ploy to sell more blu rays?

I could be wrong about this, but I believe it was a robot's head, which makes the censorship doubly crazy.

and it's actually a semi-important part of the story so they'll have to cut under a minute of footage to cover it, although in my head I can see how they might edit around it - it's not just a straight lift out of the episode.

Having seen the full episode to write the preview, I have to admit my reaction to seeing the scene at the time was "really?"

It is going to be very interesting to see how the edit is done and how much it affects how that third act is perceived.

Maybe they´ll forget changing the file on itunes or it might be to late to do that now...there is a (slim) chance that the scene is in the itunes version. Since my only way of watching it before the DVD comes out is itunes anyway I´ll keep you updated.

I have of course not seen the episode, but it's usually not that hard to cut to a reaction shot, is it?

Self-censorship is also known as tact or class. Everybody getting upset about a shot is kind of funny.

The beheading sequence "lasts" about 30-45 seconds, so no it's more than just removing the blow to the head (assuming they want to remove the decapitation scene entirely).

If it's just the blow to the head they want to remove then it shoudn't be too hard to cut around.

It's not a shot, it's a sequence which provides a plot reveal/twist, and removing the whole thing will basically bugger that up.

It probably is sensible of the BBC to do this; there is a horrible possibility that ISIS is planning to murder the British hostage during the British-hosted NATO summit that just began in Cardiff, so there's a nasty possibility that news of that will break just before or after this episode goes out. Usually I'm against kneejerk censorship, but in this case...

Yeah I would tend to agree. I've seen some bad knee jerk censorship though. I still remember after Hungerford ITV I think pulled a revenge western and then showed Firefox instead...Firefox which shows various scientists being gunned down by Kalashnikovs...

Even worse than that: I was working in TV listings at the time and ended up doing overtime to put through the schedule changes on the day of the Dunblane massacre, one of which was...
The BBC pulled a film because of its title (I always remember it as being the Bond film Licence to Kill, but it must have been something in the style as Bond would have been on ITV) and replaced it in part with an episode of the sitcom Waiting for God... in which Graham Crowden's character said to Stephanie Cole's "Haven't you got something better to do, Diana? What about machine-gunning children? You always enjoy that."
The perils of rushed schedule changes.

Ouch! It's tricky though isn't it, just goes to show that even the most harmless of sitcoms might contain something contentious given the right set of circumstances.

I was just on another forum, and someone there mentioned that DW has been self-censored before. In the pre-aired version of the "Everybody Lives" two-parter, there was audio of a neck being cracked. That sound was removed for the broadcast version, but restored for the DVD release.

I am not in a place where I could pull out the DVD to check for myself, but if true, it would stand to reason that they would release the full version on DVD (and probably iTunes as well).

I think you might be refering to the TV movie, not only was teh neck snap removed but so was some of the early gunplay. And from what I understand the BBC has been editing out the lesbian scenes from the Asian broadcasts.

I watched the original sequence and it's interesting because I think it may flow better this way. I think it's less cliche and actually darker this way.
