WonderCon: Roberto Orci Offers Star Trek 2 Update

Source: ComingSoon.net
April 2, 2011

Immediately following a very well-received Cowboys & Aliens panel at this weekend's WonderCon in San Francisco, producer and screenwriter Robert Orci spoke with press backstage about the film, also dropping a few details about the upcoming Star Trek sequel which he's scripting alongside writing partner Alex Kurtzman.

In addition to saying that he thinks that production will begin this fall, Orci admitted that specific fan reactions to the original film have directly influenced the sequel's narrative and dropped a few hints about what fans can expect.

"Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain," he explains, "So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, 'Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.' You start to incorporate people's opinions... If it's organic to the story and you find someone who doesn't think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that's maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point."

Rightfully proud of the 2009 film, Orci still recognizes that there were other issues with the project that didn't sit well with the entire fanbase and hopes that the sequel might offer a chance to rectify some of them.

"[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody," he adds, "and, because that was an origin story for 'Star Trek,' everyone had to come in at a certain point. Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they're going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I'll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says."

While the first draft of the script is complete, Orci's job is far from over and plans to be working on the sequel for some time to come.

"We'll be working and tweaking that story through shooting," he says, "This time we don't have a strike, so we'll actually be able to change things on the set. On the last movie, we handed in the script and that was it. You couldn't change a word. This one feels like we've got all the time in the world."

allright...

Wait, Roberto Orci is refilming TWOK now? ;)

The quick way which half of the main cast was shoehorned in was one of the things that bothered me most about Trek XI, so that's one thing I'm glad they'll have time to work on in the next movie.

FWIW at this stage, sounds very promising. Indeed, I've thought for several months now that if I were making XII, one of the first scenes would have Pike showing up to Federation President Candice Bergen's office to get a stern talking-to about his recommendation that Kirk be formally granted captaincy of the Enterprise. :p

Those things are really nice to read. Gets me all excited!

It makes a lot of sense if Kirk's promotion is more of a political move. Branding him as the hero of the federation who stopped Nero for the general public to admire and idolize, while behind the scenes there are some in starfleet who aren't pleased that this Lieutenant with no other experience has been placed in command of the prestigious U.S.S. Enterprise.

That, and hopefully a new engineering upgrade... hahaha.

this is me right now

For the love of God, give us the "REAL" engine room, with the "REAL" warp core instead of beer barels and whatnot!

I love the reactions at Trekmovie.com. They're begging the engine room to be redone and some are even pleading to have the Enterprise shrunk down to it's TOS/classic movie size.

Because these things matter so much to the story:rolleyes:.

I don't mind if they reuse the brewery but that was done due to budget constraints and I suspect that if they can they will replace the brewery engine with CGI.

Honestly, I'm neutral as to what engineering looks like. It doesn't even need to be in the movie to have a good story but we'll probably see it so Scotty can get some screen time.

I think they should leave the exterior look of the nuPrise as is because this series of films needs to have its own distinctive look and not be a rehash of things past. That is to say, I want them to keep the Enterprise huge with its bulbous nacelles and swoopy nacelle pylons.

I think its great that they might address Kirk's quick promotion and maybe tie it into the plot with Kirk showing his critics that he is indeed capable and worthy of being captain.

Also, I think Orci and Kutzman and whoever the director turns out to be need to focus on writing a good script and making a good movie and doing it in the way that seems right to them, not worrying about trekkie complaints or demands. Making a good film comes first regardless of how much it fits in with the established fanbase's desires.

In short: OMG I hope this is going to be epic!

What are they going to explode this time? I mean they've done stars and planets, are they going to explode the Gamma quadrant?? The Galaxy???

I'm pretty sure that Kirk's early command being questioned was the subject of one of those cancelled post-STXI novels. Maybe they really were cancelled for fear of clashing with the next film.

Maybe they really were cancelled for fear of clashing with the next film.

They were postponed. Put on hiatus. No way will Pocket let four paid-out contracts go to waste, even if the novels need a little tweaking later.

Bad Robot wants to have first, second (and third?) bites of the new cherry before the tie-in novelists. I see no problem with that. There's no "fear" involved. The books would have clashed in some way and delaying them means that they can eventually be tweaked so they don't clash.

A poor choice of words. I should have said "...their summer 2010 release was cancelled...". And assuming it's true, of course there's fear involved - if they didn't fear repercussions/fan backlash/whatever the books would've been out last summer.

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't bother me that engineering was a brewery but then again, that's not what attracts me to Star Trek. I just hope that the next movie is well written and doesn't try to go too overboard to appease fanboy/fangirl compliants because there will always be something to complain about. I'm glad to hear they are planning on addressing Kirk's quick promotion but I don't want it to be the focus of the entire movie. As long as Kirk matures as a character, which he just has to, I'll be happy.

It's funny how some here are adamant that the writers won't listen to fanboy complaints, but here ya go.

I say: Keep the Brewery. It was part of the unique look of the reboot and I would miss it if it'd be gone

I liked the more low tech industrial look of their engineering type ship sections, especially on the Kelvin, and it gave it a more real look despite being more futuristic.
BUT the brewery did not at all look like an engine room for a Starship, and the size of these areas feels way too big imo, even if we take the largest of the possible Enterprise measurements into account.
