Roberto Orci Not Directing Trek XIII

I personally don't see how why it is necessary for Star Trek to compete with the Marvel universe, the Star Wars universe, or any other film franchise.

If Paramount wants to release a big budget action movie (Star Trek), they're competing with the other big budget action movies for attention. Creating a huge expanded universe of films makes people more likely to see a film and less likely to see the competition.

Paramount does not have the resources to create an expanded universe of Star Trek films, and seeing as the nuTrek films have been a commercial success, I don't see what would drive them to make that kind of investment.

I don't think it is. But the level of planning and care that Paramount is putting into Star Trek isn't great.

Right, yeah, I didn't mean that they should create an EU for Star Trek, but a little more direction for the franchise would be nice. Maybe something similar to Star Treks II-IV?

It's not that I want it to compete, I just want it to have a similar level of care and planning applied to it, rather than stumbling from four year long gaps between movies and the current farce.

One of the downsides of hooking up with Bad Robot is that JJ Abrams has a notoriously short attention span. The majority of his projects have started out very strong and well conceived only to fall apart once he moved on to his newest fling.
So while I still hold to the idea that nuTrek:III is not some crashing disaster or fumbling mess, there is a natural arc to productions associated with Bad Robot, and Star Trek is on the downside of that arc.

Not sure there was a plan then. II ends with Spock dead. Then Nimoy relents so III is about getting Spock back, but they loose the Enterprise. IV is a fish out of water comedy that only ties into II and III in the beginning and the end. And at the end they get a new Enterprise that looks like the old one. IIRC the original was for the crew to get the Excelsior. So the only plan seems to be make changes and then change every thing back.

The best they can do is put their best effort forward and hope to generate buzz. Paramount has always been a bit sluggish about promoting Trek. That is going to have to change, it will the deciding factor of how ST13 and beyond performs.
Yes, all well said. And I think that means that they need to pull out all the stops on this one.

Yep and that could mean doing the story of Star Trek The Return (one of Shatner's books) that has characters from every facet of Star Trek or the one that Brent Spiner said he wanted to make, something with all the captains: That is really pulling out all the stops.

It would be an awful, awful idea. I mean, I'd still go and see it, but holy shit, what a train wreck it would be.

Nope. That's too continuity-heavy. Bringing the whole goddamn Star Trek Universe into a movie might make a nice 50th anniversary gift to the fans, but it's a commercial bust.

By pulling out all the stops, I meant like as in all the stops on a well-tuned organ of epic proportions, not all the stops theoretically possible in the multiverse.

I don't mind nods to older Continuity but yes this kind of Concept doesn't work...won't make money in the box office...above all to get new Trek you have to have whatever Trek is being made be Profitable beyond the base....

What many seem to forget is that with the exception of Pine's Kirk, "the captains" are each in excess of (minimum) 60 years old. It'd be like watching The Expendables....

Yeah, having read the story (I like the book), I just don't think it would translate at all well on-screen, and that's if we assume the principal characters will be hale and hearty enough to pull it off.

Minus the cigars and testosterone.

Well, the cigars anyway. I think Patrick Stewart carries enough testosterone for a dozen sexagenarians.
