I get your point TracerBullet, and the only answer I have is that there are obvious reasons why Disney is a monstrous entertainment juggernaut and Paramount is not.

Yep.

If Paramount wants to release a big budget action movie (Star Trek), they're competing with the other big budget action movies for attention. Creating a huge expanded universe of films makes people more likely to see a film and less likely to see the competition.
I personally don't see how why it is necessary for Star Trek to compete with the Marvel universe, the Star Wars universe, or any other film franchise.

Paramount does not have the resources to create an expanded universe of Star Trek films, and seeing as the nuTrek films have been a commercial success, I don't see what would drive them to make that kind of investment.

Not sure there was a plan then. II ends with Spock dead. Then Nimoy relents so III is about getting Spock back, but they loose the Enterprise. IV is a fish out of water comedy that only ties into II and III in the beginning and the end. And at the end they get a new Enterprise that looks like the old one. IIRC the original was for the crew to get the Excelsior. So the only plan seems to be make changes and then change every thing back.If Paramount wants to release a big budget action movie (Star Trek), they're competing with the other big budget action movies for attention. Right, yeah, I didn't mean that they should create an EU for Star Trek, but a little more direction for the franchise would be nice. Maybe something similar to Star Treks II-IV?
Yes, all well said. And I think that means that they need to pull out all the stops on this one.The best they can do is put their best effort forward and hope to generate buzz. Paramount has always been a bit sluggish about promoting Trek. That is going to have to change, it will the deciding factor of how ST13 and beyond performs.

Yep and that could mean doing the story of Star Trek The Return (one of Shatner's books) that has characters from every facet of Star Trek or the one that Brent Spiner said he wanted to make, something with all the captains: That is really pulling out all the stops.
Nope. That's too continuity-heavy. Bringing the whole goddamn Star Trek Universe into a movie might make a nice 50th anniversary gift to the fans, but it's a commercial bust.
J. I think you'd be in the theatre by yourself.
It would be an awful, awful idea. I mean, I'd still go and see it, but holy shit, what a train wreck it would be.
What many seem to forget is that with the exception of Pine's Kirk, "the captains" are each in excess of (minimum) 60 years old. It'd be like watching The Expendables....It would be an awful, awful idea. I mean, I'd still go and see it, but holy shit, what a train wreck it would be.
Minus the cigars and testosterone.
