Rob Marshall in talks to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Rob Marshall, the Oscar-nominated director of Chicago, is in talks to direct the fourth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Studio Disney is eager to secure a director, to allow filming to begin next year, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The Ring director Gore Verbinski, who directed the original hit film, and subsequent sequels, announced he was stepping down from the series in April.

The previous three films earned more than $2.6bn (£1.5bn) around the world.

It was confirmed that Depp would reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow last year. The actor is also scheduled to play Tonto in another Disney franchise, The Lone Ranger.

Auditions are reportedly under way for the latest Pirates outing. Neither Keira Knightley nor Orlando Bloom are expected to return.

So far Marshall's only notable movies have been a romance and a musical. I wonder if he can do a big budget comedy/adventure?

I think it's possible. He knows a lot about beat and flow, which should work well with the rhythmic writings of Ted & Terry. At least we know the fights should be well-choreographed.... LOL

I wanted Verbinski to do Pirates 4 since he has been with the franchise since the start but it'll be interesting to see another director's take on this series. It would be funny and not too out of character if Jack randomly started singing in the next movie.

I'm glad Disney isn't thinking about getting Michael Bay.

Johnny Depp is playing Tonto? Really? Is there a need to have The Lone Ranger return to the big screen (or any screen)?

I don't mind that Verbinski is gone. He obviously didn't have the ability to reign in the writers on the exceedingly bloated sequels.

As for the new director, I don't mind. I only care about Johnny Depp returning. I remember reading that Geoffery Rush was interested in returning, too, so that'll be a big plus. Everything else is gravy.

All the interviews I've read from various people involved have said that they're hoping to go back to the basics. Less CG, less characters, more intimate.

I'm imagining it's gonna be a cat & mouse chase involving Jack & Barbossa, with the Fountain of Youth thrown in for good measure.

I think it's a good idea that Disney wants to lower the budget for the next Pirates. While DMC and AWE were successes the budget for the last movie was getting a little out of hand. I can imagine them wanting to scale things back.

I hope that they resist the urge to make Jack the main character and keep him as supporting like in the first movie. The character works better that way. I look at the Pirates trilogy as being about Elizabeth even though Jack was the most entertaining part of it.

Gore Verbinski was once best known as that dude that directed the Budweiser commericals with the frogs. The guy has gone a long way since then.

I dunno... I'm highly doubting they'll keep Jack a supporting character. By the end of AWE, he'd practically become the lead (or was it just that he outshined everyone else so much that it just SEEMED like he was the lead...?).

As long as they balance things between he, Barbossa, and whatever new characters they bring in (as well as pre-existing characters)... I don't think it'll be too bad.

Personally, I could sit and watch a three-hour movie of just Jack and Barbossa bantering back and forth. Love 'em.

Yeah, I thought it was odd, what they did with these movies. It seemed to me that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies would have worked really well as a series of unconnected pulp adventures, à la Indiana Jones. Instead, they went the Star Wars way: they decided to build a fictional universe and to tell a continuing (and convoluted) story. It was obviously very successful, but I'm still not convinced it was the right approach.

I'm curious to see that. Besides I'm sure someone uttered something similar when RDJ was cast for Sherlock Holmes, "do we need more Holmes".

These are characters that are ingrained in our pop culture and will always be around.


As for being on topic:
I own all 3 Pirates movies largely cause I got the last two for $5 at a second hand store. I find them bloated and actually contradictory once you get to AWE. When I "watch" them they tend to be back ground noise as I go about business in the house.

What I'm looking for in a 4th installment is that sense of simpler fun and unexpected adventure that I found in the first one. If they can deliver on that I'll be satisfied. As for singing the ground work is already laid there. Yo Ho Ho it's a Pirates Life for me has been sung just not in glorious fashion. Maybe a big dance number on the deck of the ship! Steeming from being drunk on rum of course.

Yes, all they have to do is have Jack hallucinating again, and we could have a huge awesome musical number.

I know the diehard fans of PotC might not be very happy about something like that, but... well, hell, *I'm* a diehard fan, and I think it'd be amazingly funny.

Or... Oh, get Jack and Barbossa drunk together in the Faithful Bride and have them perform a duet.

Geez... Maybe they should totally just do a musical. I seriously think there's some good material to be had for one.

If not... well, maybe we can convince some college acting troupe to write and perform a PotC musical that would be TOTALLY AWESOME...

The only one that has been confirmed to sign on is Depp. There is a great chance that Rush will be back as Barbossa considering he signed onto the first movie after hearing Depp was involved.

Keira Knightley has commented several times that she is done with the franchise. Orlando Bloom hasn't made any comments. I'd imagine there isn't much the writers can do with the characters of Will and Elizabeth anymore. At the end of the third movie Elizabeth is a stay at home mom and Will is busy on the seas.

The two sequels are flawed however I enjoyed them since they were very ambitious and greated expanded the world that the Pirates franchise takes place in.

I suppose they could always use Will as a cameo appearance at some point. Either way, I'm intrigued about the idea of a new approach for the next Pirates film. Should be fun.
