News Rob and Michele Reiner found dead

Bad people through history have reasons for the things they said or did.
No. They have rationalizations. To quote Spock, in "The Alternative Factor,"
Jim, madness has no purpose or reason. But it may have a goal.

Anyhow, I saw this morning they're talking about the death penalty for the son. I'm usually not against it, but holy shit, I can't imaging his siblings want yet another family member killed!
The only justification for an execution is that the condemned, simply by remaining alive, endangers the lives of more people than can adequately be protected by any other means. Vengeance has absolutely no place in a civilized criminal justice system.

Nick Reiner's attorney has left his client and the court has appointed a public defender to represent him.

Honestly, assuming what we know about Nick Reiner's history, even a reasonably talented public defender ought to be able to make a credible case for an "insanity" defense. The only real question IMO is whether that defense is: (1) that the defendant, due to a mental disease or defect at the time of the crime, couldn't understand the nature/quality of their act or knew it was wrong; (2) the defendant's inability to assist in one's defense/competency to stand trial.

The former negates criminal responsibility for the act itself (after the fact), leading to commitment for treatment, whereas the latter halts the trial until the defendant can understand proceedings and assist counsel, with commitment to a facility for restoration, not punishment.
