Spoilers Riverdale - Season 3

This damn show is soooo over the top with the agnst and drama and dammit, i’m all in.

Loved the ending scene with Arch and Juggy headed out of town on the tracks while the Palidin theme played. I know Archie is considered the Red Palidin but the nod to Stand By Me was really cool.
 
Last night's episode didn't impress me much. Archie and Jug arrived at a small town where they met a farm girl named Laurie Lake. It was later revealed that Hiram Lodge had ties to Laurie and the whole community, and then the two boys were on the run again. The episode went on to focus on Veronica's "casino night" enterprise and Betty's confinement in the Sisters of Mercy convent. More references to the Gargoyle King were featured.
 
So it's been revealed that the origin of G&G can be traced to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy asylum where Betty has spent the past several days. The RPG was conceived within its walls and had been used as a therapeutic tool, and it somehow got out into Riverdale and was quickly distributed among the youth populace. Lately, Hiram Lodge has been in cohorts with Sister Woodhouse, who administers his Fizzle Rocks hallucinogens onto the residents of asylum, all the while feeding their Gargoyle King fantasies.

The midseason finale concludes with yet another father figure posing as the villain. First, Cliff Blossom, then Hal Cooper as the real Black Hood, now Hiram as the Gargoyle King? Fred Andrews, you're next!
 
It's hard to buy the idea that pious religious types would've been the inventors of a role-playing game, given that in the early days of RPGs, it was the pious types who were condemning them as evil, satanic influences.

Also, when Jughead's mom said they didn't have to worry about Penny anymore, were they implying that she murdered Penny? And how is pure, clean-cut Archie suddenly so okay with his best friend's mom torturing and possibly killing someone? This show has gotten way too dark. What made the first season work so well was its incongruous blend of upbeat high-school hijinks and wholesome Archie-ness with the intense teen drama and darkness of the Jason Blossom murder and the conspiracies around it. Also that the core foursome remained so good and noble in contrast to the Machiavellian craziness of the adults. The past two seasons have doubled down on the dark side at the expense of the fun side, and they've increasingly compromised the lead foursome, so it's just not as enjoyable anymore. I've finally reached the point where I'm starting to ask myself if I really want to keep watching.
 
^ I see now why you're not interested in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. :) I know you've mentioned it in another thread.

The show doesn't strike me as dark, at least not like crime drama or police procedurals. I was really hoping it would have some supernatural elements nd that it would involve the Farm and Mr. Evernever, but all that was just a red herring.

Sounds as though, so long as the core four remained essentially good and optimistic (which I agree with), you'd prefer the show had followed my suggestion, and brought in vampires and aliens and sh*t. I'd have happily seen Archie and Co. become Red Dawn-style teen fighters against a werewolf apocalypse, and all without losing their inherent nobility. But, Archie vowing to kill Veronica's father? The hell? ;)

Which is to say: I feel for ya, I really do. I'm still interested in giving Sabrina a try, but I ditched Riverdale halfway through last year, and haven't looked back. A shame, but there it is.

That's a bit different. Maybe that's part of it, but also I'm just not a fan of horror, and the trailers made it look like the horror elements are fairly graphic. I just think I'm too squeamish for it. I mean, I liked Buffy and Angel, but they weren't very graphic and they balanced the darkness and humor pretty well. Indeed, I think of them more as superhero shows than horror shows.
 
I feel like this Gargoyle King arc has been dragging on for too long. It was intriguing and mysterious at the beginning when it was less about Hiram Lodge's drug operations. Now this series is more like a crime drama with teenage angst.

Archie is injured by a grizzly bear and starts hallucinating. Back in Riverdale, Ronnie seeks the protection of her dad from ... practically himself and his Gargoyle minions. The troubled kids from the asylum are cooped up at the Coopers' while Betty goes after the Sisters of Mercy for their dealings with the Man in Black himself.

The CW orders a Riverdale spin off pilot Katy Keene

The CW has ordered a pilot for Katy Keene, a spinoff of the hit teen drama, TVLine has learned. Based on the Archie Comics character, Katy Keene is a musical dramedy that follows the titular fashionista and her friends to New York City, where they strive “to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio,” per the network. Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will pen the pilot with fellow Riverdale writer Michael Grassi, and serve as an executive producer.

Whoa! Things just got interesting tonight! I think the show is finally moving away from the Gargoyle King storyline.

There's a bit of a time jump from last episode as Archie returns to Riverdale, much to the surprise of Fred, Veronica, Betty, Jug, and everyone else. But something's different about him, as Ronnie observes, but nobody knows what he's going through mentally and emotionally. And following the attempt on Hiram's life (who shot him?), Ronnie decides to call it quits with the redhead; then Reggie gets back with Veronica. Quick rebound.

Betty visits Hal in prison after Alice takes away all her savings and funnels them into the Farm. Hal claims he was the original Gargoyle King who had poisoned Principal Featherhead back in the old days.

Jughead and company discover the identity of the Gargoyle King - a former Serpent named Tall Boy who now works for Hiram Lodge.

After Claudius Blossom is found dead in his cell, there's a new sheriff in town, FP Jones!
 
Lies, secrets, deception, underhanded tactics, murder. I feel like I'm watching a police procedural, which would be great if it wasn't named Riverdale.

Ronnie pays Jughead to do some investigating on who shot Hiram, who lies unconscious in the hospital. Jug suspects Madam Mayor Hermione played a hand in the attempted murder. He turns out to be right, of course, but there's more to that. She had brokered a deal with FP Jones to pull the trigger in exchange for his being appointed the new town sheriff. Hiram and Claudius' partnered drug operations were polluting Riverdale's water supply, thus causing some of the youngsters to have seizures. This did not sit well with the mayor, and the fact that Hiram refused to shut down the manufacturing of Fizzle Rocks. So she had to take action.

Meanwhile, Betty conducts her own investigation into the death of Claudius in prison. Autopsy results reveal that he, as well as Clifford Blossom, was poisoned by no other than Aunt Penelope though both deaths were made to look like suicides. Why? Because Penelope hates men. :lol:

In both scenarios, neither Jughead nor Betty can do anything to implicate Hermione or Penelope, respectively. Aunt Blossom knows that Betty has had some dealings with the Black Hood, which she could use against her. Similarly, if Jughead says a word about Mayor Lodge, then Sheriff Jones could go to jail too.
 
I liked the noir inspired episode but this season is not good. I hope the Demons and Gargoyles stuff doesn't continue. Betty and Jughead are still great to watch but everything else feels tiresome.
 
Tall Boy is dead, Hiram's drug lab is gone so I think they're pretty much done with that Gargoyle stuff. I hope so because that Dungeons and Dragons stuff was bad
 
I don't know why I hadn't noticed this before, but I find Penelope Blossom, Cheryl's mom, very attractive and alluring. :adore: Like Moose Mason, I can be attracted to both sexes, and Penelope is one hot mama! Surprisingly, actress Nathalie Boltt is much younger than I expected compared to the other "parents" of Riverdale. She's closer to my age.

Regarding tonight's episode, I don't recall Reggie's dad as being a member of the original Midnight Club. He did play G&G back in the old days, but he was part of another group.

I feel sorry for Kevin and Moose. The elder Mason was messed up as a teen when his own parents sent him to the Sisters of Mercy for conversion therapy. So he wanted to destroy what he couldn't have in his youth, a gay relationship.
