RIP William "Trelane" Campbell

Sad news indeed, he was terrific as Trelane and Koloth. I think I might just pop The Squire of Gothos on, to honor him.

I just found out a few days ago that William Campbell had passed away. Now of the Klingons 3 (my name for the 3 original series Klingons), only Michael Ansara is still alive, and he'll be 90 next year.

I loved this guy's acting, both as Koloth and Trelane. I heard he was disappointed in his performance as Koloth on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", but I don't think he should have been.

The character felt quite different from how it was on "Star Trek", but in my opinion, not in a bad way. It made sense for him to be a lot more serious and dignified than he was in his youth, and I enjoyed both versions of the character for different reasons.

Young Koloth was funny because of how he hid his disdain for Kirk behind a mask of artificial friendliness, and Old Koloth was funny for how quietly full of himself and judgmental he was. And of course Trelane was just a joy to watch for his naive whimsy.

I admired Campbell's devotion to his craft as an actor and was delighted to hear him say on a Star Trek DVD interview that Trelane was his favourite part he ever played. It's always pleasing to see actors who take pride in their work on Star Trek. God bless the man.

Very well put, Too Much Fun. :techman:
