RIP Robert Duvall, Dead at 95

thx1138-01.jpg

I recently rewatched Godfather 1 & 2 and while Brando, Pacino and Caan get the showier roles, his quiet, calculating Tom is just as essential a part of the ensemble. I like G3 more than most but what on earth were they thinking omitting him from it?

Other roles of his that come to mind are the dogged decent cop in Falling Down, with Kevin Costner in the underrated western Open Range (doubling as director, Costner was modest and sensible enough to give Duvall the meatier role) and opposite Richard Harris in Wrestling Ernest Hemingway. Like Gene Hackman, a movie star who didn’t need movie star looks; luckily for us, he kept working for longer than Hackman.

RIP, I also remember his performance as Ned Pepper from True Grit. Wounded by John Wayne and delivered a kill shot by Glen Campbell, as Miri's Kim Darby watches.

He had a lot of roles with limited screen time, but he made them all memorable, Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird, a cab driver in Bullitt, Major Burns in the Movie Mash.

Sad but 95 is pretty good, and he left us with SO many great characters and performances. Find me another guy who can convincingly play an army colonel, Josef Stalin and a NASCAR crew chief.

A few other things. The original Frank Burns (already mentioned, I see). Despite having a small part, he nearly stole Deep Impact (IMO). He had a cameo in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).

I think the director and Duvall have said that the priest is the first pod person.
Edit to add.
I liked his portrayal in 'Lonesome Dove'.
That was the first time I remember seeing Tommy Lee Jones in any major role; after that he seemed to pop up everywhere.

He played Commander Waterford in the 1990 Handmaid's Tale movie. That's all I remember seeing him in.

I was too young to know who he was, but he had a supporting role in this really stupid movie called Let's Get Harry. Rebels kidnap Americans in Colombia, including Mark Harmon, and his buddies back home want to go rescue him. They get financial help from car salesman Gary Busey and hire mercenary Robert Duvall. And telling you everything you need to know, the director is "Alan Smithee."

Just before Christmas I watched him playing an astronaut alongside James Caan in a film called 'Countdown' directed by Robert Altman. He will be missed.
