I actually remember him from The Twilight Zone, playing the title character in the hour long episode "The Incredible World of Horace Ford." Anyone remember that one?

Maximum Overdrive is the first movie I remember seeing him in, as the southern fried shitbag truck stop owner.

He did well as Commissioner Gordon in the Burton movies...and got paid just for showing up in the Schumacher ones.

But his most memorable role that I saw was Hang 'Em High.

Hingle plays a visiting officer by the name of Daniel Webster Tucker, who takes Hawkeye and the staff to task for their April Fools jokes. Then after Tucker has threatened to bar them from medical service after the war, gets a joke played on him .... and ...well, why spoil the rest of the surprise?

According to imdb his first film was On the Waterfront but he was uncredited. A very good start for a man with such a huge career. For a whole generation he was Gordon and as a Batman fan I am sorry to see him go.

I'm sorry to hear about his loss. I still remember the first time I watched Batman and I have noticed that I have recreated his 'entering axis chemical scene' a few times while on assignment.
