RIP: Mike Resnick

I was sad to hear the news this morning, though not really surprised, since I've been aware of his health problems over the past couple of years. I had the chance to become acquainted with Mike (a fellow Cincinnatian) and his daughter Laura (also an accomplished author) over the past few years, and he was always willing to offer career advice and guidance to me. Last year, he bought my first published fantasy story, "The Melody Lingers," for Galaxy's Edge Magazine, which he edited. I regret that I won't get the chance to sell him any more stories.

I've been aware of Mike's name since my childhood, since he wrote the novelization of the Galactica 1980 pilot movie way back when, but of course that was among the least of his accomplishments as an SF/fantasy author and editor. I don't think he remembered much about it when I brought it up. Probably his defining achievement in fiction is his Kirinyaga series, but he's done countless things.

Thank you for sharing that, Christopher. I was a fan of the Santiago universe stories.

I've read his Starship series (Starship: Mutiny, Pirate, Rebel, Flagship) multiple times, its probably my favorite non-franchise series of sci fi novels, and The Fortress in Orion was also very good (although the public library never bought the sequel, unfortunately). He was definitely an author I liked enough that I should have hunted down more of his work, but never ended up doing that for some reason. I might have to make a point of doing that soon.

RIP Mike Resnick

Is this the same Mike Resnick that edited the ALTERNATE series?

ALTERNATE GENERALS
ALTERNATE PRESIDENTS
ALTERNATE KENNEDYS

And I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.

Yep. That was him.

I did not know him well, although I'm sure we must have attended the same cons or Tor parties a few times, but I enjoyed his work and remain grateful that he once generously gave me a quote for a first novel I was editing.
