Rip in the fabric of space/time fandom

Some days it's clear that the question isn't whether fandom will endure but whether it should.
It needs to evolve.

Or to find a new dimension to go play in.
Or are we looking at a fractured fanbase that will be decided in about the year 10,000 AR, After Roddenberry, which is about at least fifty Earth years. I.e., what if it's successful and nobody around here likes it very much? The story that is.

fandom split when TWOK came out...

And when TNG came out, and when TMP came out, and when DS9 came out, and when "Enterprise" came out...
Maybe a better word is fractured but so far I'm liking this movie better than TOS. The direction is awesome. I didn't think J.J had it in him. He was always so timid about directing. It's very creative directing. I just hope Nero is not playing up the old personal revenge act again.

When I read your posts xortex I always feel sort of trolled but yet not quite trolled...
I dunno.:lol::p

In a sense it did really start dumbing down with TWOK. It had to appeal to joe sixpack and aunt maude in peoria just as much as to fourteen year olds. If everybody is happy then nobody is.

Dumbing down how? TOS was very very basic... almost Sesame Street
levels of moral tale. The stories were very basic Scifi lines. It was good
but it was no 2001. It was mainly in the delivery of the characters that
made it awesome and the fun sense of adventure that mad it palpable.

TNG had to be the talkiest and most "Cerebral" of Treks so it in no way
went downhill or became dumbed down at TWOK. It just continued
more of the same on bigger levels. I think many people are going to be
very surprised when this movie comes out. The judgements are on a single
trailer, and the judgements are in almost complete opposition to the actual
former works and history of story telling by the director and his crew.

Star Trek was bland but not basic. There was a high level of sci-fi there. I was talking about the movies appealing more to the masses who don't all love sci-fi. esp. hard edge stuff.

^Star Trek has not ever been hard-edged SF. It's been space-opera adventure with sprinkles of the harder stuff but only in the most superficial of ways. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think George Clayton Johnson called it "introductory science fiction." It was already watered-down SF with some "morality" for the television viewing audience.

Yeah seriously, you could watch an episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood
and it would have about the same level of complexity of TOS without the
cool gadgetry(Though Trolly was awesome) and great characters.

Great show, great characters but extremely basic.

Yes my judgements are based on:
The non-retro ship designs
The non-retro uniform designs
The actors who don't look like younger versions of the crew
The greeblized Kelvin
The fact that Kirk had only met Pike once when he took command
The Academy uniforms that don't look like the establish uniform
The Enterprise being built on Earth

I can come up with more.

I will definatley be surprised by this movie if all of these trailers and reviews and trailers and everything turn out to be a hoax and JJ actually made a good honest TOS prequel that fits with the rest of Star Trek.

Odd, cause it looks more like...
Very retro ship designs with 2008 updates.
Very retro uniform designs with 2008 updates.
The actors who look very much like younger versions of the crew.
The greeblized Kelvin? Where? Oh well, this is it's first appearence in Trek
so it can look however the creators like.
The fact that Kirk had only met Pike once when he took command is just
canon fodder.
The Academy uniforms that look very much like the established uniforms
only updated for 2008.
The Enterprise being built on Earth since it's never been shown that the
Enterprise was originaly built in space.

Pretty much a very faithful 2008 updating of a 1960's TV show.
