RIP DC Fontana

Oh no! :(

Dorothy Fontana has always been one of my favorite Star Trek writers. Her insight, wisdom, sensibility and unique perspective has shaped not only the original series but the franchise as a whole. I'm almost entirely sure things like Spock and the Vulcans would not have been as great without her creative input. She brought aspects to Trek that only she as a female writer could have added. It often seems it's only in the last couple of decades that her impact on Star Trek has been given the highlight it deserves.

May she rest in peace. I will remember her and her work forever.

Such a shame. Just last night I was rereading portions of her only Trek novel, Vulcan's Glory, and just the day before yesterday I rewatched "The Ultimate Computer," which was substantially rewritten by her. She was a great writer, and her contributions to Trek were extraordinary. We're the poorer for her absence.

R.I.P., Dorothy.

I can't even begin to do her writing career justice, but one personal standout to me was how much depth she always gave the likes of Kirk and especially Spock in her work. Roddenberry and Coon did a lot for the characters, and Nimoy's input helped a great deal. But so many of Fontana's stories explored him so well, and the world building in just Journey to Babel alone demonstrated how invaluable she was to Trek and beyond.

RIP to a genuine pioneer writer.
