RIP David Eddings

:(

David Eddings' Belgariad was my first true foray into the fantasy genre, after reading mostly sci-fi prior to that. This news saddens me greatly.

I have never read any of his work, however, my husband has been reading his books for years, and so I've had his books around my home for as long as I can recall. RIP.

This is really sad news. In Paradisum deducant te Angeli.
RIP David Eddings

I always had a soft spot for his work. The Belgariad were the first fantasy books I read post Lord Of The Rings as a teenager and I have always kept a special place in my heart for Garion, Polgara, Belgarath, Durnik, Eriond and co.

May he rest in peace.

I had enjoyed his style when I came across it first with the Belgariad. I continued to read some of his works but grew out of it - Mallorean and The xxx of Althalus were the other books that I read. It was interesting how his books regarded females as the strict disciplinarian but with an indulgent "boys will be boys" attitue and their husbands/lovers basically as sheepish boy-men.

No way. :(

I adored his writings. Especially the Redemption of Althalus, which I thought was superb.

RIP. :(

Ditto that. Haven't picked up anything since the Polgara book, but he was a fun read. RIP.

Really enjoyed reading his first two series. I was always amazed at how he could write so much witty dialogue for his characters.

Plus, he's an inspiration to all aspiring novelists, that you can 'break out' even well into your 50s.:techman:

Too bad. Sorry to see him go. The Elenium & Tamuli were some of my favorite books growing up. Sparhawk is the man.

Couldn't have said it better!!!!!

I got into David Eddings books when I was in high school and that has been the only foray into fantasy that ever stayed with me. I could never get through the Lord of The Rings, but David Eddings characters were so awesome and his writing so sharp that I could never put the book down. When he would release a new book I was either at the bookstore or at the library bugging them about when they would get the next one until it came in. Sparhawk is by far my favorite character and I have used the name in one form or the other for email addresses since email became popular.

Rest in peace David, and thanks for brightening up world of this lonely high school kid all those years ago!!!!!

Oh, damn. I knew from reading his bio that Eddings was kind of advanced in years, but still...

My aunt actually introduced me to the Belgariad in '93--bought me the first three books, and at first I was reluctant to read them because I really wasn't into fantasy.

Wound up getting the entire series, the Mallorean, the Elenium, the Tamuli, the Redemption of Althalus. Definitely one of my favorite authors of all time, and I will miss him, but I'm grateful for his stories and characters that were just a sheer delight. I loved the adventure quests, the dashes of dark humor, the epic battle sequences, and quieter character moments. And yes, I always did like how he frequently depicted his female leads as strong, maternal types regardless of what age they actually were.

Wow, I didn't realize he was that old. RIP Mr. Eddings.

I'd actually been thinking about checking out some of his stuff, too. My brother used to read a lot of his books--him and David Gemmell, who also recently passed away. :(

Very sad news. :(

I loved the Belgariad and the Mallorean and had always held out a little hope that he might revisit the world one day. RIP

Whoa, this is certainly a shocker. I never realized he was so old either.

+1

Very sorry to hear this news.

I fondly remember the Belgariad & Mallorean.

I read them as a young teenager, which I think is about the right age for them. I haven't picked up much of his since then (except Redemption of Althalus, which I also enjoyed), but they'll always hold a place in my heart & memory.

RIP Mr Eddings.
