Rings of Power S3/Hunt for Gollum Anticipation and JRR Tolkien Discussion thread

News on two different Tolkien projects in the same number of days.

Rings of Power season three has begun production...

...and The Hunt for Gollum has a release date!

I figured that we didn't need two different anticipation threads and could use a general Tolkien discussion thread, so here we are. I am one of the few who have been enjoying the hell out of Rings of Power, despite its canonical digressions. I'm actually more skeptical about The Hunt for Gollum. Both the Hobbit movies and the War of the Rohirrum movie felt awfully padded out, and I can see the same thing playing out here. Especially since the story in question was sufficiently told in a 45-minute fan-film, I can only imagine how padded a 2 1/2 hour movie might feel. And then there's the (re?)casting issues involved.

I don't really know the Middle Earth canon that well, beyond the basic points we got in the first couple LOTR books, so I've been really enjoying Rings of Power so far. I learned a long time ago not to go into these kind of adaptations expecting them to stick exactly to what the source materials say.
I'm not quite what to make of The Hunt for Gollum, but I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic since I'm one of the few people who really likes The Hobbit movies.

From the comment section of the AV Club story "Will any of us still be here to meet Andy Serkis' weird Gollum movie when it comes?"

Ah, but is it true? I for one choose to believe. :P

The Rings of Power is a show I like whole acknowledging that its a average show that could have been an absolute classic if it was closer to the source material, because the source material is just so much better then what the writers of the show frequently pull out of their asses. I'll always be fond of it because it inspired me to actually put in the effort and finally get into the material beyond The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, but ironically reading all of the great stuff like The Silmarillion/etc just makes RoP look worse by comparison. Still I'm excited for RoP Season 3, I just hold out a (probably vain) hope that they'll do things like acknowledge Galadriel's husband and adult daughter and stop trying to tease Galadriel making out with her future son in law Elrond.

Also I'm beyond tired of the stupid proto-hobbit shit, and the complete destruction of the Wizards backstory in general. I swear I do like the show a lot, but it makes itself hard to love. :vulcan:

As for The Hunt for Gollum, I will watch it when it comes out but I have zero enthusiasm for it. Gollum is not a lead character, and we already know all of the interesting parts of his life so the movie is either going to feel pointless or take as many if not more liberties with the source material as RoP does.
