Rifftrax: The Wrath of Khaaaaaaaannnnnn

I don't understand the appeal of mocking a movie that's actually good. Sure, there are over-the-top moments (I'm sure they'll have a ball with the part where Kirk yells Khan's name), but making snide comments about a solid movie seems rather pointless to me.

I watched some of their commentary for "The Dark Knight" and thought it was stupid. Why would I want to listen to people making wisecracks about a good movie instead of just watching the movie? MST3K made sense because the movies were horrible, so listening to someone joke about them would be more fun than actually watching them. This is just unnecessary.

As someone who loved the Dark Knight rifftrax commentary, I thought I'd offer a contrasting point of view.

I don't think there are perfect films that are above some humor or criticism thrown their way. Even great movies like Dark Knight had several moments and lines, etc. that could be made fun of. (as has been done to the point of tedium now with the "batman voice.") So as long as the tracks are funny, it still works.

In a way, it's more enjoyable watching a decent film with jokes, because then you're getting a two-for-one thing.

Often in MST3K, even with hilarious comments, the awfulness of the movies themselves still made it sometimes a chore to watch them just for the background jokes.

That's not the case when you're watching a movie you actually like, just with background jokes.

Ouch. That's a nasty shot. I thought all Star Trek fans loved that flick. I still can't imagine a roasting of "The Dark Knight" being entertaining. I agree that the Bat-voice is worthy of derision, but that's such an easy target. Too easy.

Not all, mercifully. And sometimes easy-target gags can be funny, although they're often overdone to the point if ridiculousness, sucking any actual comedy out of it (sfdebris and Linkara being two big repeat offenders).

I think it can be fun to mock a "good" movie and TWK is hardly the first "good" movie they've done. I see it as more just sitting with friends and and discussing the movie and just noting out the flaws that are naturally in it or the odd stuff that's in it that 30-years of movie-making changes will stick out more. It could have a degree or two of humor to it. Sure the bad movies are vastly more fun but "good" movies can be fun to mock too. (It should be noted that there were a handful of movies on MST3K that were mocked that were also considered "good" movies for their times and they even mocked an Oscar-winning movie. (Granted not for acting, writing, directing or as a film.)

Point is, a movie doesn't have to be "bad" to be mocked as there's something to mock in every movie. The Dark Knight and Titanic to me are both great movies and both were riffed very nicely by the guys at RT.

Besides, as a huge fan of MST3K and thus Rifftrax I'm petty much obligated to watch this. ;)

Which cut of the film are they doing? If it's the theatrical cut, that kinda sucks for those of us with the big ugly grey box.

Yay! Recently re-listened to the Riff Trax of TFF, TUC and GEN. All good stuff!!

Rifftrax, of course is the same basic idea as MST3K, but it's never been just making fun of bad movies. Riff-ing isn't always as insult, but in the jazz tradition of taking inspiration and improvising (yes I know they're scripted, but the jokes had to be improvised at some point) so they go from movie references, to quirky in-jokes, to look-alike references.

At the end of the day, it's kinda like watching a movie you've seen a hundred times with some close friends and literally riffing off each other (part of the reason I don't think Mike's solo efforts were as good as when he's riffing with Kevin, etc.) So sit back, geek out, and laugh along. It's not all about insults.

Ditto

Trak is now available. There are separate downloads for the Theatrical Cut and the Director's Cut.

Okay, I'm not even out of the opening credits sequence and I'm in tears from laughing.
