Ridley Scott Making "Brave New World"

God, I LOVE Huxley. But who's Ridley Scott?

He's directed little known movies such as Alien, Blade Runner and American Gangster.

You know, I don't recall hearing of Alien or Blade Runner until I joined this board. (But then, I'm too young to have seen them when they were released, let alone remembered them after watching.)

Dear, God, Cicero! Are you jerking my chain? Put down the mouse, go rent those bad boys and watch-it just doesn't get any better.

I loved Brave New World when I read it in high school (finally, a book with plot, and not whiny coming-of-age stories!), and still enjoyed it on a re-read a few years back. Oh, and I think BNW is more insidious than 1984 (though not as oppressive), because in 1984 you know that life is shit, whereas BNW has the trappings of an utopia. When I first read it, I often thought to myself that this was a society I'd like to live in (provided you were an Alpha or a Beta, of course).

Creditorly yours, the Rent Woman

God, I LOVE Huxley. But who's Ridley Scott?

He's a journeyman director who keeps losing out to Uwe Boll for the movie projects he really wants to do. So instead of directing greats like Tara Reid, Burt Reynolds, Matthew Lillard and Verne Troyer in truly important movies, Scott's usually stuck with the likes of Michael Douglas, Russell Crowe, Nicolas Cage, Ewan McGregor and Julianne Moore.

Rats. I was hoping he was going to do Ender's Game. Alas.

Heh, tell me about it. In my opinion Ender's Game is much more interesting than Brave New World... would make a better movie, too.

Even better than either of those two IMO would be Scott adapting Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War." That book could be turned into a stunning film and Ridley Scott has the visual sensibilities to pull it off.

I never much cared for the book myself. The super-pious, self-flagellating Christian "savage" was way too heavy handed for my tastes. Still, the overall concept is interesting. And by making a movie, we can bypass Huxley's incredibly clunky prose.

Genetic engineering is so contemporary that updating the tech will be incredibly hard. Lots of people will know enough to be critical of drivel. But if they don't update, the movie will start off dated, and fail. The real question is who's writing.

I think I'll put Blade Runner and Soylent Green on my Netflix list since you people keep pounding the drum.

It looks like DiCaprio is going to be the lead in this Brave New World. :vulcan:
His talent is quite limited, but he does have that Mona Lisa smile.

The last time someone recommended me a movie, it was A Clockwork Orange and I could not have been more disgusted/grossed out/disturbed. Definitely a movie I wish I could "unwatch".

^I liked DiCaprio in Blood Diamond & The Departed. Heck, I like Titanic too. (The trick is to not think of it as a romance but to remember that it was directed by James Cameron, the man who gave us The Abyss, Aliens, The Terminator, & Terminator 2. He deserves some loyalty for that.)

I recently read the book, some decent points but a bit stretched out and simple plot, Huxley having contempt for some characters (Lenina being clueless, Bernard forgetting all of his criticism to get ahead), hard to adapt. I could see Clooney as Mond, but we pretty much have embraced consumerism and thinking's still around too, for those who take the time and bit of effort to.

Really? While disturbing, it is a fine statement about the permissiveness of society regarding "youth" and a keen look at the eve- aging definition of "children" or "young people". That these men, whom in another time would have been treated as fully grown, responsible members of society, are treated instead as juveniles made a bold statement of where our civilization's trends are heading. A fierce and daring movie for its time, IMO.

Watch "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "The Man in the Iron Mask" and "Basketball Diaries". DiCaprio has a tad more in the talent department than a smile.

God forbid anyone watch that movie and not be disgusted/ grossed out/ disturbed. It'll haunt you for years. Now, that's film making.

Ridley's been more and more uneven as the years pass by, but maybe returning to SF will help.

"Brave New World" in development

Scott will produce with Leonardo DiCaprio, who will also star, the blog reported.
Here's what the blog says:
The studio has brought on Apocalypto scribe Farhad Safinia to pen the script; he's expected to be working shortly. Scott and DiCaprio also will produce via their respective Scott Free and Appian Way banners, with Michael Costigan also producing for Scott Free and George DiCaprio producing at Appian. Peter Cramer is overseeing for Uni.
Scott has mentioned casually in interviews that he's interested in the 1931 novel, which Appian Way owns, prompting a flurry of rumors on sci-fi and other blogs over the past year. But the studio details as well as DiCaprio's personal involvement always have been murky.
Now, with a writer on board and Scott Free and Appian execs meeting frequently during the past six months, the project has more momentum, though several people familiar with it emphasize that it remains at the development stage.

Yeah, I think this is a much better idea than an Alien prequel. I think that franchise is so played out, especially after watching "Aliens" again and not being as impressed as I inititally was (I still think it's good, but now I definitely believe that the movies began to decline in quality after the first one, and it was no exception).

Apparently a TV movie adaptation of "Brave New World" has already been made, but ever since I read the book, I've always thought it was worthy of the big screen treatment. I especially remember a scene at the end of two things happening at the same time that struck me as very cinematic, which I couldn't help but imagine playing out like a movie in my head.

No matter how Scott's version turns out, I'm sure it'll be better than the atrocious "Farenheit 451" of 1966, but with the amount of projects Scott attaches himself to, the re-make of that might already be out before the ball gets rolling on this. Maybe they'll come out at the same time and we'll have competing dystopia movies! Imagine the box office showdown! :)

Ridley Scott is a very skilled director, but I've always thought that he had no particular point of view, no vision of his own, nothing to say beyond the pretty pictures, and I find most of his films to be emotionally sedate and lacking a human core. In my opinion, he's completely the wrong kind of director for "Brave New World".

Which is the biggest reason I find "Blade Runner" so disappointing and am so bewildered by its popularity (aside from how 'pretty' it is with the awesome special effects and production design). I don't think that means he can't make an emotionally involving story or a solid sci-fi epic, though. I think what you say is true of many of his movies, but I found parts of "Alien", "Gladiator", "Thelma & Louise", and "Matchstick Men" genuinely moving.

Ridley Scott's also making movie based on the Monopoly board game, if you can wrap your heads around that one.
