The American version was a bit disappointing and I was expecting a continuation with rather than a remake, but I’m glad the ending was different, and how the writers teased us with it in Ashes to Ashes.
I don’t remember any of that, but I may have watched it grudgingly, and in a state of grump. The US version was great...except for its ending.
Although, not only is the US ending most likely something that was hastily thrown together at the last minute (because of the show's cancellation), there are also hints that it wasn't "real" anyway,* so I guess I can take some comfort in that!
* you'll notice that in the scenes on the Mars lander, there are lots of 70's style decorations all over the interior. Bit strange for a NASA spacecraft, wouldn't you think? And the boot that steps onto the surface of Mars is Gene in his 70's suit...
In an earlier episode, there is a scene where Sam - in the present, which was about 2010 at the time - goes to see old Annie in a nursing home. My theory is that this is the real "ending", and the entire series is actually Annie's fantasy. Probably Sam just visited her once in the hospital (maybe while working on a case), she developed a crush on him, then she creates this elaborate fantasy where they are both cops in the 1970's. And of course Annie being the commander of the Mars mission would be another part of this fantasy.
Probably my favorite part of the US version is when Sam would have visions of his "present" self being treated in the hospital, and it would manifest itself as a cheesy 70's soap opera.![]()
Ooh, I know! I'd like to see a bunch of characters from Western shows, including fictionalized versions of historical figures with their own shows, who originally had absolutely nothing to do with each other whatsoever, thrown together for one last rip-roaring adventure. There could be bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, together with Lucas McCain from The Rifleman, Bart Maverick from Maverick, and Caine from Kung Fu, all rounded up for this shindig by Brady Hawkes from The Gambler.

Actually I was thinking of Kenny Rogers' ridiculous made-for-TV movie The Gambler Returns:Ah, so you HAVE read the Trek novel Ishmael, then?![]()
What if Jason McCord from "Branded" wandered on to the ranch owned by Lucas McCain from "The Rifleman".Ooh, I know!
