Rick Sternbach, Rick Sternbach, Rick Sternbach...

Forbin

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
*POOF* he appears! (I hope).

Sorry to bother you, sir, but I have aquestion: On the 1701-D, what the heck are those giant vent-like apertures athwart the bridge supposed to be for?

They're mighty big openings!

What are they ventilating, nuclear fusion furnaces?! They're HUGE!

I figured Rick was handier than Andrew, since he checks the boards once in a while.

Forbin: before asking Rick Sternbach, you should ask Andrew Probert who designed the ship in the first place, but only after you've done some basic research of your own (the evidence of which is missing from your post). Ed Whitefire's blueprints label them "emergency venting", while Rick Sternbach's call them "emergency flush vents". However, it is fair to double-check with Rick Sternbach as well, since he's been finessing the Galaxy details recently. You can email Probert if he doesn't see this thread.

Based on Rick Sternbach's blueprints for the E-D, there are atmosphere systems on deck 2 below these "vents".

Maybe they're for Worf's farts. You have to have a sophisticated filtration system for something like that.

Thanks. I'm at work when I suddenly got to wondering, and I couldn't wait. :D

While Probert designed the overall ship, I don't think he had much hand in the fine detailing. Rick is the better source in this case.

Nope, Probert is always careful about the how's and why's of his designs. However, Rick is the better source for any changes after season one ended, since that's when Probert left TNG.

Don't you people know anything?! They're Metatmospherical Teristonial Intakes! Unless you subscribe to the other camp that says they're Emergency Internal Atmospheric Exhaust Vents for situations of emergency saucer landings to maximize pressure equalization.

Hell if I know :P

I have an image in my head of Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbes) marking through one and scribbling the other.

Great and now we just hijacked Forbin's thread, because I now have an image of that classy bumper sticker of Calvin peeing, except this bumper sticker is on the back of the Enterprise!

Can we please rename this thread for clarity? It is enough to invoke Rick Sternbach in discussion; no need to yell.

Really dude, I don't think RS will be so offended. Of course I don't know him, but if he's cool enough to visit this thread as a fan himself, I'd bet he'll take it all with a grain of salt- on the rim of his daiquiri!

And e-message protocol for yelling involves the use of ALL UPPERCASE letters. Forbin is just being a jerk by repeating his name over and over :guffaw:. That or he typed it in a cave! :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:...

I'm sorry- I'm quite tired and gitty.

Forbin's just using the Beetlejuice method of summoning.

I never did really notice those huge vents, but now they seem like a gigantic mysterious mystery like the rectangles on the E-Nil's saucer top.

Except this one probably has a definite explanation.

Bet ya a smiley face that Probert had nothing to do with them.

I'm pretty sure Andy had labeled those as emergency flush vents in some diagrams of the ship back in 1987. Not a lot changed over the years; most of the shapes on the design are recognizable as specific Starfleet equipment.
