Rick Berman Chimes in on Trek XIII

You can actually read what Orci said here.

What that sounds like to me is that they came up with a basic outline of what they wanted for the story, not that they wrote a complete screenplay and then just changed the names to Khan. It was likely chosen to be Khan very early on.

But it's true that the general concept of the movie could work without Khan. The same general theme would remain without the need for all the superficial elements that come with Khan. And that's really all that they were.

This really needs to be repeated. Orci and Kurtzman started out with an original villain, and then they were asked to fit a previous Trek character in to that villain role, not just because "Star Trek"

Also, given the popularity of TWOK, is it any surprise that they would visit the idea again. I don't think it needed to be Khan, at all, but I don't think it was the worst idea ever either.

I think there was a genuine effort to make a new story, but given the reaction to Trek 09 as "not being Star Trek Enough" I can understand why they would err on the side of caution.

In any case, ID works just fine for me, and others. Come on number 13!

visit WOK yes but not directly copy the most important part of the film to the point of it blurring the line of serious drama and parody like spock screaming Khan.

WOK is a film that should be left alone once and for all. writers and fans need to move on and make another classic star trek film that will rival wrath of khan.

Screaming Khan was pushing it, I will agree to a certain extent. I think that Kirk's death flowed from the character arc very well, and made the scene more impactful for different reasons than the seen from TWOK.

Also, TWOK will keep getting revisited, either thematically or in story beats, because it is hyped up as the best Trek film ever. All other Trek films will forever live in its shadow.

Three things, xavier:

One: when posting a reply to a post which is quite lengthy, please quote only those portions to which your comments are being addressed. There's no need to make everyone scroll past the whole post again if you're only speaking to a couple of sentences near the end. Just edit the rest out of the quoted material, as I've done for you above.

Two: I'll give you partial credit for omitting the exaggerated, drawn-out word of the scream itself this time, but when I asked you to give that a rest for a while, I really meant that you should give it a rest. You've already made many, many posts about the scream and it's time now for you to leave it be or risk a warning for spamming.

Three: I've asked you over and over to refrain from taking swipes at individual fans or fan groups and to refrain from making comments about what fans need to do or need to get over. When you continued to have trouble speaking of fans without being insulting or condescending, I recommended that you confine your comments to the subject of the movies and those who make them, and simply avoid talking about fans altogether.

Now here you are, again making pronouncements about what fans need to do. Since requests, suggestions and recommendations clearly aren't getting us anywhere, that'll earn you a warning. Comments to PM, if you will.

Why are Star Trek fans bothering to listen to the guy who thought the final episode he was involved in writing for ENT - "These Are The Voyages" was his "Valentine to the fans"

If anything - they should read ANY comment he makes about producing Star Trek as "What we SHOULDN'T do....":guffaw:
