Rick Berman Chimes in on Trek XIII

Sorry, Rick, but these new movies are exactly what I want Star Trek to be.

I presume the movie Rick Berman wants to see is an over hyped two part TV episode with an anti-climactic story that also looks like it was budgeted to be a two part TV episode.

I don't like jumping onto the knee jerky band wagon Berman hate, but the new movies are just what they are supposed to be. Fun, fast paced, and exciting. Making movies were not his strong suit.

As part of my bf's introduction to Trek, we watched the TOS movies and then the TNG movies. Much to my surprise (and with zero prompting on my part, honest), he observed that I-III and VI looked much more cinematic than much of the TNG movies (IV was meant to look like a local contemporary movie after all, and V was just a mess). That's not a slight to, say, director Jonathan Frakes or so, but production does so much for the look and atmosphere of a movie. While the director has the job of translating the project from vision to film, the producers create and maintain the vision, and in my mind, Berman saw the TNG movies as expanded episodes, for the most part.

That's why they failed. They didn't push any boundaries whatsoever. None of them was an event like TMP, for example.

Having said that the Berman year represented what I consider the 'golden era' of Trek on TV. It just had to end somehow, and the TNG movies, despite me liking some elements of them all, represented the end of that era.

JJ Trek is a new chapter but I fear it will end with the next movie as Paramount treats Trek like utter dogshit. You only have to compare it with how Marvel has worked it's various franchises to see that. Inevitable perhaps but unfortunately true.

I'm sat here wearing a Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary T Shirt. Bought from my local supermarket for eight pounds. There was no Trek option.

Eh, to play Devils Advocate I've got no less than 3 different Trek shirts from my local Tescos over the past few years, so it hasn't been underserved so much as you might think.

Marvel is a phenom, but what else out there even comes close? It's an unfair comparison, wishfully wanting Trek to be on that level.

Personally, I hope so. I'm no fan of the last two movies but I liked JJ Abrams in general but he's jumped ship and now we're left with Bob Orci? : (

I would literally rather have no movie than one directed by him.

My biggest concern with Orci is it doesn't look he's ever directed anything at all in his life.

My only real problem with the last two films is Spock's "KHAAAAAN!"

It just didn't work for me. Or at all, I'm afraid. But hey, they tried.

Other than that, I'm happy to just go along for the ride.

I'm not concerned. Abrams and Bad Robot are still producing and the actors are hitting a comfort zone with the characters.

Why? He's untested, sure, but so far he's loyal to the franchise and his scripts for Star Trek have been critical successes.

I personally dislike pretty much everything the guy has ever done. Critical successes are irrelevant in that regard.

I personally like most of his Star Trek work, but I've found much of his other work pretty lacking (Zorro, Watchmen, Spider-Man 2, etc), and to me his hits are outnumbered by his misses. So with that said, I'm fairly skeptical about his helming the third movie.

I'm with you. I can't stand Oric's writing.

I realize many people like ST09/STID, but I think Orci is terrible, and I have zero faith the next Trek film will be any good.

While Orci's writing left much to be desired, I think most of Into Darkness's faults are by Damon Lindelof.

I enjoyed 2009/Into Darkness and only wish Orci luck and I hope he takes the criticisms of the last film and uses them to craft a good story and make the best movie he can.

I'm not sure I'd say "most" but yes, it was Lindelof who kept insisting on using Khan, even after an original villain was created.

I wasn't making a direct comparison - I don't expect Trek to make a billion dollars at the box office, I was just using Marvel as an example of a franchise that has had a lot of care and forward planning lavished on it, with interconnecting movies and TV shows.

We get 2 (admittedly good) movies four years apart and a totally untried director for the franchises biggest anniversary.

Fair point, but I've never seen any in my local one, and it's a very big store.

I loved Amazing Spiderman 2 and thought it was a very gripping story. I have a lot of faith in Orci's ability.

I might be alone in that camp, but I will still support this next installment and Orci's involvement :)
